Okay, I've been inspired by everyone's logs for their language learning. So much so, that I'd like to try to keep my log again.

First I will give an update of where I'm at, and then I'll attempt to write notes on my daily activities thereafter.

HUNGARIAN
Studies in Hungarian are going quite well. I'm chatting via text on msn almost daily to people who do not speak any English, so that is helping. Although, I find that whilst my writing is improving at great lengths, I still need to work on speaking. That is challenging for me, as I tend to lack the confidence to just have a go in situations and will fall back on my English. I must endeavour to work on that!

As for my studies, I continue my weekly 2 hour lessons with my teacher. At this class we mostly focus on getting my head around the grammar. I like this, because it forces me to regularly focus on this area of the language.

At home, I try to do more natural activities like listening to music, reading, watching movies. In the last 2 weeks I've decided to go back and work through FSI and Assimil again. I have to be honest and say that I've never gotten far with FSI OR Assimil as I've lost interest fairly quickly.

However, I'm currently on lesson 44 of Assimil, and I've just started Unit 6 of FSI.

I'm having massive troubles with my internet connection at the moment, but I'm trying to download Anki (it's never finishing the download at this point). As soon as it is up, I am going to enter every USEFUL word I come across in Assimil and FSI that I don't recall, and also add any new words I come across in my day to day activities.

FRENCH
I am really keeping my studies in French at this stage minimal. I am only doing audio learning, currently through Michel Thomas French. I only have the first 2 hours of audio at the moment, the full 8 hour course is on order for me at the library - however, it's not due back until 14th July.

I do also have downloads of the "Coffee Break French" podcasts and a few other French ones. So once I run out of MT, I'll just use these until I get my hands on the rest of MT.

Spooky. That's almost exactly where I'm at too. I've completed Assimil lesson 44, and just finished FSI Unit 5. I've actually paused my Assimil studies, as I felt FSI was a more efficient way of learning the basics.

Hey DaraghM,

I tend to agree with you - for me, I feel that FSI 'cuts to the chase' per se. However, I have heard so many great reviews of both of these programs, that I figure I'll try my best to just keep going with it.

I must admit, I probably am a bit slower at Assimil than FSI - not because it's harder, but because I might do one lesson every 2nd day as opposed to daily. I'll listen and read one day and then go back and actually put effort into learning it the next.

This time around I'm just trying to keep up the variety, so use as many resources as possible. I'm also wanting to buy Pimsleur Hungarian - just to have some speaking drills and practice (work on pronunciation if nothing else!).

I'm holding back on Assimil right at this moment because I want to put a bunch of words etc in Anki - and I'm having difficulties with my internet and can't download it. (Okay, okay, it's probably just an excuse to hold off on doing it... I'll go do it now! :P)

HUNGARIAN

Assimil lessons 44 & 45 covered. I've also been translating back and forth from the beginning of Assimil. Today I did this for Lessons 5 & 8.

Covered Tape 1 & 2 of Unit 6. Hoping to finish Unit 6 tomorrow and move onto Unit 7.

FRENCH

Busy day today, so didn't do anything in French.

Busy weekend with competitions, so I haven't progressed much at all. Should be able to make up for it tomorrow as I have a 2 hour class followed by some time I have allotted for further study.

Hi Katie,

I'd like to wish you good luck with your Hungarian studies. It seems that with these lessons every week you'll be able to progress fairly quickly. How are you finding Anki? Did you manage to download it yet?

Hi Jack!

Thanks for the well-wishes! I'm getting there slowly. Unfortunately it's taking longer than I'd like it to, but I have to be more confident and speak more - THEN I'm sure I'll see a dramatic increase. I can write & chat via MSN/Skype quite easily now. Speaking is my biggest hold back.

But, I am lucky to have a FANTASTIC Hungarian teacher now. She really is a gem! And on top of giving me a one on one, 2-2.5 hour lesson every week, she does so for a FIFTH of the price of a half hour lesson with my last teacher!!! And although I very much liked my old teacher, this one is so much better. She is actually a teacher, who taught in Hungary - she even has all of the official school readers etc!

Still no luck with Anki. Each time I try to download or run it, it tells me that the file is 'corrupt'?? At first I thought it was just my computer, but now I'm not so sure! Any help would be greatly appreciated, as I really feel at this point in time that I need something extra to help me learn vocabulary!

Good luck with your Hungarian studies!
Can I ask you how you started with Hungarian?

Vincent
