I have been studying French for sometime and German now for the last month. Recently, I have decided to focus on these three languages: (Spanish, French, and German)

  • I love French the most, and I am taking it in school so it will remain constant.
  • Spanish has plenty of programs which helps feed my goal of traveling, or even living in Argentina.
  • My area has a few German saturday schools, so once I become proficient in listening, I will have a way to practice it. And speaking German has been a goal of mine ever since a young age :)

Plans for Spanish
Completing the entire Learnables program. I have access to it all, so I am slowly going through all 4 levels. From my pace in German, I can finish one Learnables book in about 1.5 months (with enough spare time); Basic Structures and Grammar Enchancement will take me much longer, being more than 100 pages in length. I hope to finish the program within 3 years.

Plans for German
German will be a little more difficult, because entire Learnables curricula is not available for German. There are 8 books, all on cassettes that I will go through, and one book of Basic Structures. I will work through all the books, which I estimate will take me around 2 years to finish, and evaluate my progress from there.

Plans for French
Surprise, suprise I will also be using the Learnables! There are only 4 books available however, but I will continue to listen to French in Action until I can understand nearly everything being said.

Due to time constrains, I have a feeling that I will eventually have to decide between German or Spanish, maybe even both during the school year. Until then, I wil continue to work diligently. I am especially excited to see how my accent will end up being after no speaking!

Do you find learning Spanish and French together confusing, or do you find them easy not to mix up?

Ok wow it has been a long time, but other things took priority. Unfortunately, realistically, I really do not have time for 3 languages. I can barely even finish my homework!! I will continue French in school and at home with French in Action on DVD from time to time.

My library now has the complete Spanish learnables program. Seeing that I want to study abroad in Latin America this summer, I can now begin to test my theory on listening before speaking. I have spoken a little bit of Spanish before (Hola, basic phrases) and my friends take Spanish so I often hear their Spanish. I hope that won't mess up my pronunciation!

Starting next week, I will work my way through the Learnables program. Absolutely no speaking, no translating, no memorizing. Just watch and listen. I may also use Destinos as another aid.

yaay the Spanish Learnables arrived :)
Completed Lesson 1. I also got "Baby's First Words in Spanish", which might seem a bit silly but the slow songs and clear pronounciation are really helping me get a feel for the Spanish language. When not listening to French in Action, I might listen to Destinos/Spanish radio in the background.

After listening to Lesson 30 of FIA, I have discovered that I no longer comprehend as much as I used to! My comprehension has decreased, which I suspect is due to my laziness. So I will need to double up on efforts of French. Whenever I am on the computer, French in Action is always playing in the background. By end of this year, I hope to comprehend 85-90% upto Lesson 21.

Not silly at all, I'm right with you. I found the Bilingual Baby series for a whole bunch of languages and it's been helpful with vocabulary drills at the beginning level.

Good luck!

Thanks! It's good to hear that I am not alone in listening to kid's music!

Completed Lesson 2 once & Lesson 3 once. I need to do each one 2 more times.

Ok now I am at a dilemma! It's so frustrating. I go back and forth and back and forth between languages. I love German and I wish the library carried more Learnables for German. But I'm going to stick to Spanish!

I hope to go to Latin America this summer. That will be my motivation since Germany isnt an option until later!

Wow....how time escapes me! I must be more dutiful. I'm in love with German. It's so easy compared to Spanish, so for now its German. But I will try to listen to Spanish while I am sleeping.

Completed one episode of Lesson 11 for German
