FRENCH: 1h iflash flashcard memorising of RFI words 1st attempt 81/157 (51%) 2bd attempt 130/157 (83%) OBSERVATIONS: STRATEGIC STUDY FOR RFI FRENCH I will alternate between Days A and B for French Study. (eg ABABABAB...) I will continue this RFI French plan until I find that for 2 consecutive weeks, I know 100% of the words when listening to RFI the first time round, and that I do not require the aid of the transcript first time around to fully comprehend the news. Day A 1. Listen, while Reading Transcript of RFI news. 2. Go through Transcript, and input unknown words into iFlash. 3. Find translation of those unknown words, and input into iFlash. Day B 1. Study the unknown words of the previous day, using iFlash's Score system. 2. Once I have completed the iFlash Score system, I listen while read the transcript of yesterday's RFI news. 3. I shadow while read the transcript of yesterday's RFI news. 4. I listen to the RFI news, without the use of the transcript. FRENCH: 1h 10min - listening & reading: RFI News 50m - flashcard input & translating: 30 words unknown TAGALOG: 2h Tagalog Verbs - "Tagalog Language Packet": Philippine Verb Affix System - Mood Wikipedia - Modes Basic Tagalog - Conjugated verbs table at back of book Seasite - Tagalog Verbs table Tutor Notes OBSERVATIONS: BREAKTHROUGH IN MY COMPREHENSION OF TAGALOG VERBS I've had a breakthrough. Before, I was a little all over the place in my comprehension of Tagalog, particularly because there is no authoritative Tagalog Grammar Book that details all the tagalog verb types, including the more advanced verbs such as causative (PA-IN and MAGPA-) and other verbs such as the Reason Focus (IKA-). Therefore, I took the liberty to really examine the "Tagalog Language Packet"'s verb table at the back containing the Philippine Verb Affix System. I found that although it had most of the ver types, categorised in aspect, focus and mode, it lacked the Causative focus, the reason focus and clear examples of Mood verbs, including Social verbs (such as Nakikain, or Maki- Verbs). I explored more, and found that Wikipedia's explanation and categorisation of the verbs was useful as it gave examples, and included the reason focus, causative, and the social verbs. However, wiki, was very very brief and only gave one example of each of these. Wiki Filipino Grammar is good for an overview of all available verbs types, as categorised in aspect, focus and mode. I then consulted "Basic Tagalog", and found a really useful table at the back of the book, which included conjugated verbs, in the causative form, as well as examples of the MAKI- (social mode) form. I particularly like how it shows the comparison between MAKI- and PAKI- verbs, but also shows the contrast between some MAKI- verbs being more request-oriented (conveying please), whereas some other MAKI- verbs are more SOCIAL MODE (in that it is about sharing, such as Makikain). My tutor's notes were in-depth, but at times uncoordinated and lacking a global understanding or synthesis of the verbs overall. She went through every verb-type with me, but in the end I found that I couldn't condense it all in my head because we looked at so many variations without organising it all (int categories, for example, of ASPECT, FOCUS, MODE). We did to some extent, but not thoroughly enough. Seasite's Tagalog verbs table, only included the Actor Focus and Object Focus of verbs, in their various aspects. It lacks other more complex verbs, such as those with topics like Beneficiary, Reason-Focus, or causative verbs, etc. Overall, I have solidified my understanding of verbs and conjugations and the overall structure of tagalog verbs. I have had a breakthrough today and I'm really happy! Another major finding, is that really the categorisation of Tagalog verbs by various authors and teachers really inhibited my global understanding of how they operate. Unlike French, where many authors use the same name and progression of how to teach those verbs, in Tagalog it is not as clear-cut. I found the combination of those materials, including those mentioned above, helped me. I've noticed that really ALL the tagalog verb-types cannot be neatly fitted into ASPECT, or only FOCUS or only MODE. That really most verbs can fit into both Aspect and Focus verb categories simultaneously, BUT the Mode category contains for example "Maki-" verbs which cannot fit into the Focus category. All the other types of Mode verbs can fit into some other category of Focus and Aspect, though. Have you tried Seaside's Tagalog grammar? It is the best one I have found so far.
