WIDE/IMPLICIT APPROACH (LR) vs NARROW/EXPLICIT APPROACH (wordlists)

After internalising FSI's comments about wordlists, and me having tried both wordlists and listening-reading, I am finding that I am more excited about reading really interesting works of literature and texts in the target language, as compared to rote learning of wordlists.

Originally, I had believed that wordlists would be effective for me while I am at the intermediate stage and advanced stages of french and tagalog respectively. Especially in regards to increasing vocabulary for both languages. However, I have been feeling that it can be quite dry and I feel I don't get as much personal meaning from the experience of wordlists, as I do when I read a work of literature and gain personal meaning through the coda or theme of a text. And I'm a big fan of learning significant and profound lessons.

Wordlists originally appealed to me because I fully know that I am a learner who loves words, and I can easily memorise words as they become easily embedded in my subconscious and when I visualise. I feel that Listening-Reading taps into my learning style, while at the same time sparking my imagination (of my right brain) and so I'm getting to use my whole brain, as well as my soul and heart because I love gaining inspiring and insigtful messages from books I choose to read.

I tried balancing out wordlists and listening-reading as part of my study, devoting about 30 minutes for each, however I am finding that it would be much better for me to devote 1 full hour for listening-reading for each tagalog and french. Thereby, I am more able to have greater immersion and intensity (the ASSAULT period) for listening-reading.

I'll see how it goes from now on. and I'm very excited about the books I am going to read!!!!!

I am really enjoying the use of Alif-Baa. With the DVDs, it is very interactive and uses important skills of listening, writing, reading.

At 30 minutes per day, it is taking a while to get through because each page involves doing drills and writing activities, and it is worth doing so that I can have practice writing the letters in their various forms, as well as letters as they join with other letters in words.

I certainly would recommend it. I am of the opinion that it is better than Awde's book because Alif-Baa contains drills and exercises for writing practice and an interactive DVD to keep you engaged, and allows one to listen to the sound of the letters on their own and as they occur in words. Awde's book however, can be read much quicker, and gives an overview of the letters and the alphabet as a whole.

I therefore recommend both Awde and Alif-Baa.

PS. J'ai visité votre site. Puis, j'ai trouvé le titre <<L'Arabe et moi>>. Interessant, bien sur, specialement où vous dites: <<J'aime la langue arabe en soi, c'est une langue très intéressant grammaticalement. Je n'aime pas, par contre, le son de la langue, ni vraiment la culture arabe. Si j'avais été un homme, j'aurais déjà été capable de parler la langue, mais malheureusement, je n'en suis pas un...>>
