Hi Iversen,
I just came back from the Philippines after a 3 month trip, and having bought several films and TV series. However, there is a cable channel which many filipinos or others interested in the language may purchase in Australia, and it's called TFC (The Filipino Channel), which is really just ABS-CBN but broadcasted worldwide. TFC is also available in other countries, I hear. I personally don't have it though. Also, in Australia there's the Government-funded SBS Channel which shows Filipino news everyday, as well as news and film programs in other languages like French, Spanish, Greek, Russian, etc. 1 person has voted this message useful | |

Observations: 1) I am feeling that writing out this online logbook really enhances my motivation and willingness to learn and progress because I get to share with other like-minded polyglots my experience, as well as having all my goals and progress clearly written down. 2) I find that 1 hour of the Spanish AVE course is insufficient, as I am a beginner and the course assumes a little bit of knowledge of Spanish. Thus, I would like to complement my AVE learning by doing 30 minutes of watching and studying the Destinos programme, while cutting back my AVE learning time by 30 minutes. Hence I will need a revised list of goals. 3) I want to also read a tagalog passage from the book "Mga Kwento sa Biblia para sa mga Bata" everyday. Goals Tagalog: I watch 2 hours of Tagalog films everyday, and I read a passage from the "Mga Kwento sa Biblia para sa mga Bata" everyday. French: I watch and study 3 hours of the French in Action film series everyday. Spanish: I complete activities from my AVE Instituto Cervantes course for 30 minutes everyday, and also I watch and study 30 minutes of the Destinos film series everyday. *Tagalog Biblia - "Ang Barko ni Noah" *French FIA 13-18 Observations: I had a read of the post entitled "Is consistency the most important thing?" (http://how-to-learn- any-language.com/forum/forum_posts.asp?TID=13524&PN=0&TPN=2) , and the particular reply by SlickAs who said: "I don't even know what these people who do 15 minutes per day do! I can do 15 minutes by thinking in the language while waiting in line at the bank (as in "The wait is long. What is taking this guy so long? The teller has a funny hair cut. This carpet is dirty, etc.") What do you do for 15 minutes? The key, for me at least, is to consume yourself with it all day every day and do that sort of thinking. And make the language learning fun. Imagine future conversations while you are walking from one place to another, and scribble down words you dont know when you get a chance. Look them up later. I can't even imagine what someone might do in 15 minutes per day. You will learn nothing. You cant learn a new tense in 15 minutes. On a European language I like to learn 1 new tense per day, then think about it for the next 24 hours till I have time to learn the next tense the next night. 15 minutes! Balony. The key is to think long term. Not 2 months, or 5. But 2 years and still be working on it. Even with all that thinking you were doing at the beginning. You are still doing that a year later, but now you are thinking about how to refine your pronunciation. And vocab? What do you need vocab for? When you cant say "I want", "I wanted", "I should have wanted", "If I had wanted", "I would have wanted", "I will want", "I used to want", etc. Who needs the word for "navel"? Or even "fifteen"? How often do you say these words as compared to the verb "to want"? "Fifteen" is a detail that is a word you use once per month and will pick up from context. Learning all the ways of saying "to want" is the centre of the language." In light of his comment, I reflected on my own learning, and noticed that I, too, like focusing on learning for a long amount of time and not having to squeeze in time for the language. However, in recent days, as I had prompted myself to study for literally 6 hours per day, I have now realised that this 6 hours per day may not be a feasible length of time as it will be too much when I start working at my new humanitarian posting in Bangladesh starting in April. I examined my potential schedule and found that I may only have about 3-4 hours to devote to language learning, as I spend the other time used for work and also to give time to study for my Masters degree that I will start later in the year. If three hours is the case, I do not want to feel overwhelmed and be studying 3 languages this year. Therefore, I feel it necessary to focus solely on French, by using 3 hours per day to study it, and then 1 hour for Tagalog per day. I want to keep up this amount of hours for studying these two languages for the next couple of years. In my view, I will achieve native fluency by French quicker, since I don't have to spread my focus. Once I master French to native fluency, I will then master Arabic and Spanish. (It's a slight shame that I choose to postpone learning Spanish, but I really feel that it is necessary in order for my to reach native proficiency of French, particular as I will be using the language for diplomatic relations in the future - and a poor command of French wouldn't be useful at all) Thus, my goals are now modified: Goals Tagalog: I watch 2 hours of Tagalog films everyday, and I read a passage from the "Mga Kwento sa Biblia para sa mga Bata" everyday. (The amount of hours will change to 1 hour as my circumstances change and I move to my posting in Bangladesh) French: I watch and study 3 hours of the French in Action film series everyday. *Tagalog Biblia - "Ang Tore ng Babel" *French - 3hrs FIA 19-24 *Observations: My justification for focusing on French and Tagalog for now, and postponing Spanish and other languages, can be related to solidsnake's post entitled "The joy of studying of one language" (http://how-to-learn-any- language.com/forum/forum_posts.asp?TID=4172&PN=0&TPN=1). Solidsnake had said: "I am as guilty of wanderlust as the next guy, but as someone who has always been a fast learner and have frequently moved onto the next, once i get the "gist" of something, i just want to reaffirm for anyone reading out there, the sheer joy and fulfillment one will indeed reap from pursuing a single task to a point much further planned than initially intended. As cool as it is to be be able to switch from one language to the next, to have a truly deep intimate connection with a single language is really something special. I wonder if this newfound linguistic monogamy will transfer over into other areas of my life.." For the next few years I want French to really be my focus, while Tagalog of course will be maintained as I am already fluent in it and I only want to master it now. I agree with the others who replied to solidsnake's post that said that they found the value in learning several languages, and I do want to learn several although focusing on them one at a time, as I realise now that this method is where my real strength lies. I find that I have a very strong sense of concentration as well as motivation when I focus on one or a few major tasks at a time.
