FRENCH: 30m Grammaire Progressive du Francais: Niveau Intermediare = p44-45 TAGALOG: 30m Shadowing - TV Series: Lovers in Paris (Tagalog Version) = Ep.5 0-28m18 ARABIC: 30m Master Arabic:A Course for Beginners = Feminine http://masterarabic.freehostia.com/begin/ OBSERVATIONS: TO FINISH GRAMMAIRE PROG NIV. INT BY END OF OCTOBER I did some calculations, and realised that if I want to achieve my goal of finishing the Gramm Prog Niveau Intermediare for French, I need to do 7 pages per day for October! This would translate to about 1 hour of French per day or thereabouts! I need to get cracking! ENJOYING AND LEARNING FROM TAGALOG SHADOWING I feel that I really like shadowing from tagalog movies. It's relaxing to watch interesting movies, and I am really working out my tongue to be accustomed to speaking extensively in conversational tagalog. OK. So I haven't been writing here in about 1 month. The whole month of October saw my disappearance. Actually, I wanted to create my own website so that I could log my other goals and progress (e.g for health, travels, international development, other related ideas as I travel the world). So I used alot of my October time making my website: Check it out at http://www.idevelopworld.com It also has my daily updates regarding my language progress for tagalog, arabic and french. And I think it's easier to use and see my progress, than only logging my progress here in HTLAL. So from now on, I'll put my daily updates on my website at idevelopworld.com But I'll put my longer posts and findings here still at the HTLAL forum. أنا ماثيو البارتو I am Matthew Alberto - in Arabic! Starting with Wightwick and Gaafar’s Mastering Arabic was a fantastic idea for me. I had been bogged down with the Master Arabic Website, and I felt it was really boring me. I think because it lacked clear direction and was not meant to be a comprehensive website. However, as I move forward, and do the Mastering Arabic book, I feel alot better, and I’m advancing very rapidly. So, for those who are beginners of arabic (and from an English-speaking background), I would recommend you start off with Alif Baa. As that book gives you the foundations of the Arabic alphabet and plenty of practice in connecting and writing all the variations for each letter. Then, immediately after Alif Baa, the book of Mastering Arabic is ideal. I’ve noticed that Mastering Arabic goes straight to simple sentences, and brushes quickly over the alphabet. For me, this is perfect because I’ve already perfected the alphabet, and I just need quick revisions of it, which Mastering Arabic does. Also, the audio CDs that come with Mastering Arabic are useful for helping you to listen to the arabic sounds, as well as to add an auditory dimension to your learning, and to vary the activities available to you. The music track on Track 1 of CD 1 is very cool as well, very exotic and makes you feel like you’re in the midst of arabian lands. How to say “I am [your name]“ Now the following section assumes you can read arabic writing. To say “I am [your name]“, you say: [+ your name] أنا For example, if I want to saw, “I am Matthew Alberto”, I say: أنا ماثيو البارتو This is easy, and great for introductions, so I’m sure to memorize this. The أنا is pronounced as “ana” if we transliterate it. It’s easy because the أنا is not gender specific, so you can use it if you are either male or female. P.S. When you have a look at the arabic writing, such as the simple sentence: أنا ماثيو البارتو You get such an appreciation of the beauty of the script. I find it very beautiful, as if it’s an artwork. So I’ve been watching this Korean drama/love/comedy series which is dubbed in the Tagalog/Filipino language. It’s a very intriguing series, and a great way to relax after a day’s work.
Here are some Tagalog words that I have recently learned, which may help you to learn new words, too. Most of them are about intermediate level to advanced, as I don’t hear these words often. They stood out for me as I watched the DVD. As I’ve been watching the series and shadowing the dialogue, I’ve been noting down the words which are not so familiar to me. Here is a further list of 35 Tagalog words which add to my vocabulary list.

‘Lovers in Paris’ ended well. It was very climactic towards the end, particuarly as all the characters and their relationships began to unravel. Of course, there were some loose threads by the end of it, but I think the major themes and the main characters were very complete. There is a sense of finality at the end. For me, I guess watching the entire series, you get the sense of the overwhelming power of love, which can overcome anything. (A little too soppy for some, but I guess for me, love really is powerful and I personally believe it, too)
It’s a little sad having finished the series, and going through the lives and experiences of Carlo and Vivian. I liked seeing the real actors on ABS-CBN, and it’s weird seeing that they are totally different in real life. I suppose I just got sucked into the authenticity of their acting. Here are some more tagalog words that I learned towards the end of the series!
