	Well, I decided to start learning Portuguese even though I have been actively studying Italian. Why? To confuse myself? No! Because its there! BECAUSE ITS EVERYWHERE AROUND HERE!!! Sadly, it's hard to find native Italian speakers around here, but Spanish and Portuguese are everywhere. So I figure: "why not". Learning two languages at the same time will be a challenge but from what I've read, its quite possible. My initial study materials will be: FSI: From Spanish to Portuguese Pimsleur Portuguese (Brazilian) Then I figure I'll go on to: FSI Portuguese focusing on the dialogs and transcripts LingQ I think because Portuguese is so closed to Spanish I would benefit from interesting native materials pretty soon. Although the vocabulary is very similar I still have to get used to the pronunciation which is quite different. I have trouble understanding a lot of spoken Portuguese, unless its spoken slowly. I love Brazilian music. Feb 22 (Sun) FSI: Spanish to Portuguese Downloaded and scanned the content and listened to some of the recordings. Pimsleur 1 Completed Lessons 1 - 9 while driving and walking. I skipped forward on parts that were repetative. Movie Watched "Lower City" (Cidade Baixa). Great movie if rather dark. Alice Braga was amazing and intensely sensual. Mar 02 (Mon) FSI: Spanish to Portuguese Did the first 18 pages, but first 10 are intro. Listened to corresponding sounds in recording. 	Mar 03 (Tues) Pimsleur 1: listened to lesson 15 at work. Call Girl (Movie): Portuguese movie. I watched maybe 45 min. of it scanning through it. I could understand some of what was being said. Sounded different than Brazilian Portuguese and seemed harder to understand. 1 person has voted this message useful

	Well, the Brazilian accent I hear all the time around here so I guess I'm used to it. But I suck at watching movies in Italian or Portuguese anyway. The thing I find with Portuguese is that a lot of the phonetics seem to blend together which makes it harder to tell them apart for anyone not used to listening to it. Also, a lot of the endings seem to be hardly pronounced. But it seems like once I get used to the different phonetics the vocabulary will be very parallel to Spanish. Italian phonetics, on the other hand, I find very easy but has more vocabulary that is different. It's interesting studying both as I really feel like I am getting a picture of how Latin evolved in different parts of the empire. I'd like to see if I can find some Galician and some Welsh or Irish dialog recordings to compare with Portuguese. I have some Scottish Gaelic ones. I seem to hear a lot more similarity with Gaelic in the European Portuguese than Brazilian. 1 person has voted this message useful

	Mar 06 (Fri) Movie: City of God Initially I was only going to watch a little of this before I went to bed but I ended up watching it all and without subtitles. I missed a lot of words but I tell what was going on. Great movie but it's definitely not a help to the Brazilian tourist industry. I love Brazilian music 1 person has voted this message useful
