Wow! I hope that you have been studying a long time! You seem to be making some progress! I dont think I could learn a language like Norwegian (admittedly I've never even seen a course for the language) in such a short time. Keep working hard and you'll be great!

Thanks =D. I'm now on lesson 4.3 of Teach Yourself Norwegian, and have a vocabulary of about 450 words. I'm hoping to finish this unit and start on unit 5 before break is over.

Today I've done quite a bit of studying my languages! About 2.5 hours on Norwegian, and around 30 minutes of Afrikaans.

In Norwegian, I finished Unit 4 and began Unit 5 of my Teach Yourself Norwegian book, and learned a lot of new words out of my Norwegian-English Dictionary. I'm getting pretty comfortable with the language, and can understand about 60% of everything I read on Norwegian websites.

As for Afrikaans, I've been re-inforcing my knowledge of the various pronouns (subject, object, posessive) as well as the questions words, and finished going over Unit 1 of my Teach Yourself Afrikaans book. I'm not very impressed with it, so I've been focusing mainly on using afrikaans.us, thanks to a suggestion by mick33.

I'm still probably going to study for another hour of two, and I'll be focusing mainly on Afrikaans.

Ha det & Totsiens!

I'm sorry to hear about your car accident :-( Hope you are both well.

Now. Since you will hopefully go to Norway eventually... Some comments.

To talk about going somewhere, especially a country or a city, use "dra" instead of "gå". "Dra" (can also mean "pull") is more like travel-going than walking/moving-going ("gå").

To say "this year", "last year", "today", it's "i år", "i fjor", "i dag", respectively...

For "have/had to", use "må/måtte".

Lykkelig is a rather strong positive term that you don't use often and don't tend to negate either. Depends what you're trying to say, really - but it would tend to be used to refer to happiness overall in life.

Possessives and word order can get a bit strange sometimes but it's "norskboken min" for example. It's always like that when you have a definite article and a possessive. If you didn't have the definite article the possessive would go before the noun :-)

Also, where in Norway do you plan on going? As you probably know, there are a lot of dialects in Norwegian that can be tricky to get your head around, so it can take a bit of practice. I'm a native speaker of Norwegian myself but still struggle with some things because I live in an area with a dialect that is, shall we say, very non-standard.

Good luck with it, you're doing great!

Liz

Thanks for the corrections =D I'm not sure which part of Norway I'll be going to, because it's pretty much all random, they just assign you to a family in Norway. I'm hoping it's somewhere with a pretty neutral accent though, or at least Oslo or Tromsø.

What part of Norway do you live in/What's your dialect like?

I think third edition, but I could be wrong. It has a blue sweater on the cover, though.

I haven't been on in forever, and have hardly had any time to do any language learning, thanks to my crazy school schedule =(

NORWEGIAN: I've mainly been trying to learn the difficult "u" sound (and failing at it). Because of my efforts to learn the sound, I haven't progressed very much in my book.

AFRIKAANS: I learned how to count, the pronouns, object pronouns, about posession, etc, and I learned a lot of new vocabulary =) I've got the 3 tenses mastered for the most part, and I'm growing to understand the word order better.

Ha det!

Finally, I get to continue with my log! Today was my last day of school, and my first year of high school is out of the way =). I will get a lot of time for studying now, and as you can see, I've added a new language - Latin.

This year I took French in school, but the teacher was pretty incompetent. I'm around intermediate level in French, but haven't actively studied it in months and months. I did, however, score in the top 90 percentile on the national french exam a couple months ago =D.

I'm taking French II (new teacher) and Latin I next year in school, and decided to get a head start in Latin to keep up my straight A's, as Latin is said to be difficult. My teacher loaned me the textbook "Latin for Americans" which I want to complete by the end of July.

I'm still studying both Afrikaans and Norwegian very actively, although not as much in the last month. I haven't made any progress in my TY Norwegian book, as I've been far too busy, and have resorted to listening to Norwegian audio files while doing homework so I don't lose what I have learned while I don't have time to study.

PROGRESS IN THE LAST FEW DAYS
Not much, as I had finals. I did finish the first two lessons in "Latin for Americans", and learned about the nominative and accusative cases, as well as basic grammar, such as verb, adjective, and noun declination. I have about 20 words now in my vocabulary =)

I studied some action verbs in Afrikaans on afrikaans.us, and scanned through my TY Afrikaans book a bit.

In Norwegian I listened to norwegian audio and tried to better my pronunciation. As of now I'm trying to master the 'u' 'rn' 'rd' 'rt' 'rs' and 'rl'.

I don't have time to study much tonight, because I'm going to my friend's JHS graduation, but I hope to maybe do lesson 3 of Latin for Americans.

Ha det & Totsiens =)
