$4600?! That's crazy! My parents paid $400 for me to take driver's ed, and I thought that was a lot =P. It seems the process in Norway is way too strict - I drove with my driver's ed instructor from my friend's house to my house without any classroom instruction =P.
The test we had to take for a learner's permit was VERY easy. I didn't really study for it, because I hate cars, yet I still got 90% and passed. We only needed 80% to pass. I guess after I'm 18 and in Norway I won't be driving ;P ;P. 1 person has voted this message useful | |||

It is crazy, it's become more and more expensive the past years though. Even while I was taking my lessons I could see the price rising. I like how strict it is though. I don't think I would be comfortable driving at an American road knowing that the car meeting me might be driven by a 16-year old with a few driving lessons, automatic gear shift, loud music and a way to powerful car. But that's just me. ;p
I appreciate the strictness of it, but I wouldn't mind paying a little less. :p The high cost was partially because I messed up once and failed my first practical exam also, that could've saved me $4-600. It's not very difficult to convert your American driver's license to a Norwegian one though (I think ;p), my neighbour took her driver's license in the US and she only had to do a practical exam before she got her license here. 1 person has voted this message useful | |||

I'm happy to be studying my languages actively again after driver's ed.
NORWEGIAN: I'm on lesson 6.3 of TY Norwegian, and want to work my way through the remainder of the lesson and at least part of Unit 7 by tomorrow. I really enjoy using this book; It's very enjoyable, because it's set up like a story. It is pretty much about Arne, a norwegian, and his friend, Sue, a Brit, and their adventures in Norway =P. Currently they're fighting for some reason, and neither of them want to be around each other, so Sue left with a guy named Jan, and Arne returned to Bergen to be with his family. I'm happy to FINALLY be learning some very essential things from this unit, such as counting up from 10, family-related vocabulary, and the past tense. FRENCH: I've been lazy with this, as I've been devoting almost all my time since driver's ed towards Norwegian. I went through a couple of lessons in my Assimil French, and now I'm on lesson 12. I want to finish by the end of the summer, so I'll try to do a few lessons every day. Sadly, I can't take French again next year at school, because my schedule is as full as is possible =(. AFRIKAANS: I HATE my TY Afrikaans book. My afrikaans learning is sort of at a stand-still, as I find the TY book difficult to work through, lacking in enough audio material, and very disorganized. LATIN: I'm on unit 3 of my "Latin for Americans" textbook. I want to try to get through one unit per week, so that I have a good head start by the time school starts this September. Været var dårlig i dag, så jeg studerte mye. Jeg vil gjerne studere litt mer før jeg lese Harry Potter boka min. I'm going to write something in both Norwegian and Afrikaans. It's my first Afrikaans piece of writing, we'll see how it goes =D.
NORSK: Jeg har leste alle bøker i Harry Potter serien igjen! Jeg elsker bøkene, men jeg liker ikke enden av bok sju, "Nitten år senere" - Hermione + Ron og Harry + Ginny? Nei. Jeg har vært på ferie i Quebec og Massachusetts for en uke. Jeg elsket både, men Quebec var bedre, fordi jeg dra til Massachusetts mye for å se familien min. Jeg snakkert litt Fransk når jeg var i Quebec, men ikke mye, fordi mange personer snakkert engelsk. Jeg vil dra til en by når de snakker ikke både fransk og engelsk når jeg dra til Quebec igjen. While I was on vacation I didn't do any language study, but I did listen to Norwegian quite a bit, because I'm trying to master the pitch accent. I had ignored it for the most part until very recently because it seemed impossible, but I think I'm getting better at it. I've mainly been using the website "på vei" to learn the tones, and I've found the website to be excellent! I should put a video up soon of me speaking Norwegian to see how well (or, I'm sure, horribly) I can speak =P. AFRIKAANS: (This won't be anything great or very detailed - Most of what I know is verbs =P) Ek dink dat afrikaans is 'n mooi taal! Die boek "TY Afrikaans" is nie goed nie, maar afrikaans.us is. Ek het vandag geluister op Afrikaans og Nederlands op youtube. Ek nie leer nie Nederlands, maar ek luister by dit. Wow, I need to learn some Afrikaans nouns! I've been pretty much soley studying verbs ;P. As I was saying, I like to listen to both Afrikaans and Dutch on youtube. I'm not learning Dutch and I don't plan on studying it, but it's fun to listen to and see the similarities and differencs between it and Afrikaans. Å, jeg finnet noen videoer på youtube om "Robinson Ekspedisjonen". Det er en program lik Survivor (Jeg vet Sverige var den første land som laget Survivor). Når mannen snakker til personene jeg tror jeg hørt: "Hvem blir ???? robinson. ??? ???? alle ?????. ???? en ?????? som ??????? tre hundre tusen kroner. Dere skal leve(?) i ekstrem natur..." As you can see I'm terrible at listening and comprehending what someone is saying, and I'm sure that most of this is wrong ;P. Do any norwegian people on here ever watch this show? And also, can someone tell me what he's saying, lol? Thanks! P.S. Sorry about all the probably incorrect past-tenses. Looks quite nice. ^^ I think you should favourite this video and check back in a couple of weeks, perhaps you pick up more. ;) I'm not entirely sure what he says, to be honest I hate reality series with a burning passion, but the snippets you picked up seem very correct at least. 1 person has voted this message useful | |||

Just wanted to second Henrik's suggestion that you leave this for a while, and then listen to it again. Don't worry if you don't understand everything now, just focus on the things you DO understand. Study some more. You'll be surprised at how much you'll understand in a little while.
When I first started Italian there were some videos I really wanted to understand because of their content but simply couldn't, I could pick up bits and pieces here and there but not understand what was being said as much as I wanted to. Over the last couple of days I've been rewatching some of them, as well as some more videos (more difficult ones) I've collected along the way, and understanding almost all of it without even trying (I've been studying for 3.5 months). I would suggest that you use your videos like that too. It will be rewarding when you're suddenly and surprisingly able to understand everything naturally. I was able to pick out every word, so if you want a full transcript, let me know, and I will send it through. I haven't been on this site to update my log in a while! School's taking up most of my time, I have a really demanding schedule: Honors English 10, Accelerated Algebra 2, Latin I, AP European History. Due to my hours of homework every night I made the decision to cut out Afrikaans from the languages I'm learning - It was always more of a side-project for me and I'm not that passionate about the language or South Africa, but it was fun to learn a little about the language.
I'm actively studying Norwegian & French, although since school started I haven't studied either all that much. I'm going to try to make room for them at least an hour each day though, especially Norwegian. I'm studying Latin in school, and it's going amazingly! It's my favorite class aside from AP European History, and I think the language is fascinating. This November I'm sending in my application to go to Norway next year for school, but I was hoping some Norwegians on here would be able to tell me a little more about how school in Norway works. I've tried researching it, but I haven't been able to find much of anything. I guess I would be in videregående skole (I'm a sophomore this year, I'll be a junior next year). Can anyone tell me anything about what it would be like, such as what classes are offered, if there are anything like American AP classes, etc. Thanks! 1 person has voted this message useful |
