Oh no. I neglected this log a little. There wasn't much to write about on the other hand. I did my daily reviews during the last few days, read a passage in my book, continued with assimil (Огнёв. He is just a person from that assimilated Chekhov Story.) For some time it felt, like all that new input I had in the recent weeks just lumped together to a big clot. Tarry clot of russian language, The БЛОБ! so to speak.
But it has already started to soften a little. Maybe it was just too much other stuff I had on my mind to interfere with my learning. Now I started picking up new words again, adding them to my evergrowing list. I changed the process a littlebit though. Some days ago I started playing around with famous "Iversen-word-list-method" I made several lists with words, ~7 items each and learned them for 30 minutes before sleeping, with 1 or 2 repetitions. Next morning I did another round during breakfast, then singing the lists to myself, while washing dishes. After that I converted each item to flashcard from memory. I will test this out for a while. So far I like it a lot. It really might cut the error rate for new words, which always had been very high, especially whenever I added verbs with similar stems in one go. Also writing words with a pen differs a lot from typing them, so maybe it triggers some different parts of brain. Don't know. I am no expert in learning theory, but it sounds cool :)

Today I read, that the quite popular webdictionary dict.leo.org is going to add russian as the 6th language to their service. That is nice.

- I am at page 18 in my novel. Only one paragraph left and I am through with chapter 1. yay!

- combining short word list with anki works extremely well. It feels like I am beating some tough meat with a big hammer to make it tender. I have come to this: I read 1 page/ passage, without writing anything down first. Just try to grasp the sentences as a whole as fast as possible. Internalize grammatic structure without sticking to words I don't yet know. After that I read it again, writing down every unknown word, together with my guesses about them. Then I split the list into shorter lists, and work through them the Iversen way. All the time doing this I listen to the passage in repeat, (turning the volume lower while memorizing) Next day I do a quick repetition, read the passage again and then add them to Anki by memory. Before I did this, when I tried learning ~25 words a day, it became overwhelming after a week. Now with even a slightly higher rate, it comes much more easy to me and I remember most of them, even after a longer period.

- from thursday to sunday I won't be able to do anything for my russian. I haven't had a break as long as this for months. I don't like that.

- the last word in my dictionary is ящур. In German it is 'Maul- und Klauenseuche', 'foot-and-mouth disease' in English.

- Hmpff. That break even took longer than I had feared it would. I didn't do any russian for over a week. So on sunday I had to work through 1000s of due cards. It wasn't that bad, maybe even a win. I got some distance and finally I think I am where I left back then, but it feels like it all has sunken a little deeper into my neurons. I had a long inner monologue in russian the last two nights. That is because I live under the roof and it gets very hot in here in the summer and I couldn't sleep and so I was rotating in bed like a fan and russian sentences kept rotating in my head like me and then the sun came out again and now I feel a little sick due to lack of sleep and...and..and..
Well it was both pleasant and unpleasant, but I was actually surprised about how much I could already think with my vocabulary.

- Today I continued adding 25 words.

- I had some fun with diminutives again while googling "дырочка". Found out that it is dim. of "дыра". Maybe I will turn on safe search again...

- Fortunately it has cooled down a little over the day. Hooray for clouds!

Another day, another try...
Now that was kind of a long break. I haven't looked inside my own thread for ages. And now I have to discover, that my absence was even noticed and complained about. Ouch.

(I better say once more in English what I tried to tell...)

Ouch...I blush of shame. On the other hand side I now have a little something to write about. Actually I did do a little break or- in other words - my progress slowed down somewhat during summer and autumn. Yet I never stopped learning russian completely. At least I learned russian vocabularies nearly every day.

Now as I am writing this entry, I realize, that at least the daily anki procedure wasn't for nothing. I am sure, there are still lots of grammar mistakes, and the structure of sentences might sound awkward. But I had to look only after one word. прогресс - hell I could have figured that one out on my own (Though I don't know if it really fits here) Sorry also for the capital vowels. I know it looks quirky and disrupts reading flow. But for me this is a very well working way to get a better grip on word stress without using accent marks. (And it doesn't spoil the words for 'select and google/яндекс'.)

There is much more, I'd like to write about. And a whole bunch of questions I have to ask, but I think I will save this for future posts. Actually one reason I kicked myselfs behind and reconnected to this log today and not after the holidays is, so it doesn't look like one of those foolish new year's resolution, that I usually cancel on 2nd - 3rd January anyway. Or maybe on new year's eve I should attend to completely cancel this russian stuff...? No No. Reverse psychology never worked on me either.

Tomorrow I will go visit my family. I am actually looking forward to a long journey by train which in my opinion is one of the best places to study without distraction - well, exception from rule --> if train is filled with chanting soccer retards. But that hopefully won't happen.

-- brief summary
- ~20 months of study
- 2550 words in card stack
- reading skills: getting better, less frequent use of dictionary, longer texts much less intimidating than 6 months ago. slow progress with my novel (p.22) but read quite a few newspaper articles.
- writing : feel lot more confident about writing texts without safety (inter)net yet much to improve, still spend too much time thinking about grammar, word endings.. (in non real-time)
- speaking : don't know. I should really start looking for real russian people. But they are not so easy to spot. (It is only in the movies, that all russians wear furry hats with flaps, as I recently read. Damn it. ) I at least plan on recording some readings, so maybe I could get some feedback on pronounciation.
- listening : horrible

С РождествОм, с нОвым гОдом. (Can i say those in advance or only with precise timing?)
Auf deutsch geht das jedenfalls. Yay! : fröhliche Weihnachten und einen guten Rutsch ins neue Jahr.

In total, you wrote fully understandable text, but it has some mistakes.

English sentence is... er... unfinished (You now have to write about... what?) Russian... IMHO, you want say something like "С другой стороны, теперь я могу _немного_ написать о... (чём-то)".

Действительно, я сделал маленький перерыв или, другими словами, мой прогресс немного замедлился ("замирал" is wrong in this case) летом и осенью. But it is better to move some words: "... летом и осенью мой прогресс немного замедлился".

Your Russian sentence is understandable but it has some mistakes. There isn't the word "оставился" in Russian. The best, probably, is: Хотя я никогда полностью не останавливал изучение русского языка.

Formally this sentence is correct, but "занимался учением" isn't real Russian. The right sentence is: По крайней мере, я почти каждый день учил русские слова.
