I think this will probably be more a random selection of thoughts about learning German than a log. I'm not organised enough to have a target about the number of words I lern per day or to do grammar exercises.
Eighteen months ago my firm sent me te Berlin for six months. I had learnt German at school, but not done very much in the 30 years inbetween. It turned out that I remembered a lot from school, so I had a good base to build on. My initial aim was to learn a lot of general vocabulary so that I could survive in Berlin. I crammed before I went and soon learned that it wasn't important to understand every word when I read something. I also learned that a quick way for me to learn new words was to read things that I enjoyed. That meant that I read a lot of detective novels. I love them, which means I want to get to the end to find out the answer. So that got me through six months in Berlin. I speak German with some of my German colleagues, so I get a small amount of practice and I listen to lots of German podcasts. I read German websites and my iTunes store is German. My aim at the moment is to be able to understand German contractual language. This is important for my job, but my German colleagues say that contractual language is like a second language for them, so I struggle. So, I have begun to collect and learn contractual vocaublary, whilst continuing to learn vocaublary from Krimis. I discovered Anki a couple of weeks ago and have been frightened by how slowly words sink in, but I'm not going to give up. Ich habe entschieden, daß ich jeden Tag etwas auf Deutsch ohne die Grammatik zu prüfen schreiben werde. Diese Sätze werden weder kompliziert noch lang. Der Zweck ist meine Fähigkeit um das Alltagsleben auf Deutsch zu beschreiben zu verbessern. Am Ende der Woche werde ich die Grammatik und Vokabular prüfen. Doch habe ich die Themen meines Studiums der nächsten Woche.

Heute habe ich nur ein bißchen Deutsch gelesen. Ich finde es nicht so toll dieses Krimi zum zweiten Mal zu lesen und werde morgen ein Geschichtsbuch anfangen. Morgen muß ich viele Bestimmungen eines deutsches Vertrags lesen und verstehen. Zweifellos werde ich viele neuen Wörter finden und sie in Anki einstellen.

Mein Lieblingskrimiverfasser ist Andreas Franz. Eines Tags habe ich Jung, Blond, Tot in der Bucherei in Tegelflughafen gekauft. Ich hatte nie zuvor einen ganzen Roman gelesen. In der Schule hatte ich zwei Theaterstücke und drei kurzgeschichte gelesen und ein Roman war eine neue Erfahrung. Dieser Roman ist der erste Julia Durant-Krimi. Kommissar Durant ist klug und tapfer. Endlich entdeckt sie den Mörder, was keine Überraschung ist.

Heute morgen habe ich Ritter, Mönch und Bauersleut – Eine unterhaltsame Geschichte des Mittelalters von Dieter Breuers angefangen. Dieses Buch ist das erste Sachbuch, das ich auf Deutsch gelesen habe. Das neues Vokabular ist schwer, aber ich kann die Sinn folgen.
Ich habe dieses Buch ausgewahlen, weil ich die Mittelalterzeiten sehr interessant finde. Allerdings scheint es nicht ein Buch für Leute, die ausgebildet in der deutsche Geschichte sind, aus. Bislang ist es spannend und ich glaube ich werde viel lernen. 1 person has voted this message useful | |

My appraisal of my logs this week is that there are quite a few weaknesses, but I'm going to start on decelension of adjectives and sentence structure. I shall be looking at the Word Order and Adjectives chapters in Hammer. I shall also be looking at these things in particular as I read.
Vocabulary learning is a bit depressing. I'm struggling to remember the words in Anki and I don't always recogise them when I'm reading or listening. 1 person has voted this message useful | |

Today I only managed to read an article in Deutsch Perfekt and review some vocabulary. I think it's about time I developed some goals.

Hmm. Yes, perhaps you ought to give yourself some direction to your learning. For me, I just FEEL that I lack certain parts of the language, and start working on it. Maybe if you rationally analyse your situation, your reasons for learning German and resources available to you, you would be able to draw some sound conclusions about your German journey. Having a focus not only streamlines your studies, but also gives you the feeling of satisfaction as you progress, and this works as the vital motivating factor in learning languages. :)
