I should've started this learning journal last week, but better late than never!
I've planned out the major structure of a 7 week Japanese self-study plan. Goal: To be able to achieve a Novice-Middle (ACTFL-OPI) level of Japanese for a trip to Osaka & Kyoto in December around Christmas Functions: 1. Check-in at a hotel (past experience has taught me that the staff probably has some English ability) 2. Order food in a restaurant and read most menu items 3. Buy tickets for the subway, museums, etc. 4. Ask "Where is...?" 5. Simple greetings and pleasantries --- Week 1 - Listening (Assimil, Japanesepod, Ayumi Kamasaki) Week 2 - Listening (Assimil, Ayumi Kamasaki) & Reading (Hiragana / Katagana) Week 3 - Listening (Assimil, Ayumi Kamasaki) & Reading (Restaurant menu PDFs, Signs) Week 4 - Listening, Reading, Speaking (Shadowing Assimil) Week 5 - Listening, Reading, Speaking (Shadowing Assimil) Week 6 - Listening, Reading, Speaking (Shadowing Assimil) Week 7 - Listening, Reading, Speaking (Shadowing Assimil) --- I'm not coming into this completely new as I have listened to half of Pimsleur Japanese 1. I've also got past knowledge of Chinese characters and probably recognize the meanings of a hundred or so kanji. I've also lived in Korea for nearly 6 years so Japanese sentence forms/grammar are kind of intuitive for me now. --- I've already finished Week 1, and am now nearly halfway into Week 2. I'm listening to Assimil and some J-pop music for about 90 minutes in the mornings as well as another 60 minutes or so in the evenings. Can't wait to check out Kyoto! HB, could you please give your new log a significant name, which is longer lasting than only for one week? Like "Japanese Log" or something similar? It would not be appropriate to create a new log every other week. Thanks!

I think it is quite optimistic to hope to be able to read most menu items, unless you go to MOS Burger...
But good luck with your Japanese studies! Japan is a very interesting country to visit and since very few actually speak English, any Japanese you'll be able to learn will pay off. 1 person has voted this message useful | |||

I've been keeping a running list of food items in a Powerpoint presentation. I've been
searching for food I'm likely to eat or see on a menu, and then doing google image searches and copying the best looking photos. Still not perfect on hirgana and katagana, but both are starting to make sense. Avoiding English descriptions altogether. 1 person has voted this message useful | |||

Listening to J-pop music while practicing hiragana & katagana. Finding it hard though.
I've been in Korea so long, my brain is sometimes trying to phonetically translate Japanese lyrics into Korean and then into English. I'm kind of worried this is going to slow my listening progress in Japanese and teach me a bunch of incorrect words. Any ideas? 1 person has voted this message useful | |||

Picked up a small Japanese-English dictionary and the first 2 volumes of "Death Note".
They're completely in Japanese with kanji/furigana. Tough going, but I've found it's a great way for me to reinforce hiragana & katagana. It's nice to actually feel some progress being made. Also, up to lesson 8 in Assimil Japanese I. Watching as much Japanese TV as possible here in Korea, although I can only get one channel at the moment. Kansai (Osaka & Kyoto) in T-40 days... :) 1 person has voted this message useful |
