Amazed there are kanji/hanzi I still recognize from a Chinese Mandarin class I took at
university 11 years ago - proof that rote memorization does work for me at least. I doubt I'd be able to re-write most of them though, more like a picture I recognize, rather than a written word/concept. 1 person has voted this message useful | |

Finished about a 1/3 of "Death Note" vol.1 yesterday. Going to make a first pass through
the comic just for hiragana/katagana/kanji phonics. Have deliberately avoided the dictionary and just read for sounds and recognition. Hopefully finish by the end of the week and then go back through and start making notes on words & phrases. Anybody else find it hard to mark up books with pens, pencils, and hi-lighters? 1 person has voted this message useful | |

Still working my way through "Death Note" vol.1. Also started adding to my Anki online
deck with different words/phrases/sentences using things I've come across on the Japanese Yahoo! site. Mostly sticking to my interest areas of travel and food. Deliberately avoiding grammar and textbook wordlists. My progress feels slow by not having a book and chapters, but this way of learning a language is infinitely more fun and interesting than what I've learned in the past. 1 person has voted this message useful | |

Been using translate.google.com to test my
recognition of hiragana / katagana. I usually enter some simple phrases and words that I can easily recognize. Also been slowly adding these to my Anki deck. 1 person has voted this message useful | |

Found a copy of Tampopo with English

Bought an interesting series of children's Japanese books that came with an audio CD
yesterday. There are 4 levels in the series, and two packs for each level. I had to settle for level 2, volume 1 because the bookstore didn't have level 1 in stock. They're actually published here in Korea, but the books are 100% Japanese. Great find for 11,000 KRW. 1 person has voted this message useful | |

Been listening to the audio track of th first book in the series. Probably heard it 50+
times now. Mainly listening to pronunciation & some vocabulary. Going to transcribe the script this weekend and then listen a few more times before moving onto book #2. 1 person has voted this message useful |
