Hey SII, thanks for the corrections. I have everything right on the flashcards, but I guess I screwed up a few when I typed them up. I blame tiredness. I have a question(s) for you about Russian if your willing...I'm probably entirely wrong, but I'll ask anyways. Они плохо знают наш город The original translation I had for this was, "They don't know the town very well." But once I read it I decided it was wrong and I changed it to "They don't know our town very well." They don’t know the town very well, better translates as Они плохо знают город, right? Just drop the наш? Um, just something I did without even thinking about it...but I guess I should ask a native speaker before I start changing translations lol. Again, I’m probably way off but I’ll ask anyways. Они плохо знают наш город is more Russian to Russian speech correct? And as a foreigner it would be inappropriate for me to use it because in addition to referring to the ‘other individuals’ the use of наш in this context presumes commonality with the person I‘m speaking too. You are right, "они плохо знают город" is better translation for "They don't know the town very well". But it isn't the word-to-word translation; more exact is "The know the town bad (poor?)". The exact translation for "They don't know the town very well" is "Они не очень хорошо знают город" -- this is more "soft" form than "плохо знают".
"Они плохо знают наш город" we use relatively infrequent, usually it is uses only "город" without "наш". In case when a speaker want to emphasize that they didn't know our town, he probably speaks "Наш город они знают плохо", i.e. he changes the word order, not only adds "наш" (although other word orders are correct too). I was pretty happy.“У нас ребёнок будет" pretty sure that's what I heard anyways...needed like a 1/10 of a second more to determine whether it was (нас) or (не с), pretty sure it was (нас) though. У не с ребёнок будет....(не с ребёнок) this doesn’t sound right to me. My gut tells me its wrong. Yeah i’ll say it was the other one. It sounds righter. lol. Hey SII, thanks for your input. I was kinda wondering about that translation, seemed a little off. Sweet, means I don't have to change it back...point for Brian lol. Skype, ICQ, Jabber? Um no I don't use these, probably will start sometime though. If I do have a question i'll definitely PM you, probably through the site if I'm not signed up for Skype yet. December 18th, 2009 - Week 44
Daily Stats 2:30 min vocab expansion 7 hr =>passive listening Psychological NPTSD - 577 CC - 150 mins Daily Comments Finally, re-established...its like I said before, the hardest part of learning Russian will be keeping my mind focused long enough to do it. Gone for abit, but now I'm back...time for round 2. Looking back, I let up too much on the psych component and my minds natural tendency to 'lose itself' in thought kicked in and the previous routine just fell apart. Was still listening and learning of course, just not within a directed framework. Means I'm going to have to be more of a thought nazi this time around to keep everything together. It'll be a pain, but it'll have to be done if I wish to be successful here. Hell bent on learning Russian on one hand, and naturally sabotaging my efforts on the other. That is sooo me lol. I remember reading about this in a psych textbook, though I forget what its called...a highly adaptive behavior in one context becomes a downright pain in the ass in another. Interesting in that I have a personal experience to link to the concept...but, like many things in psych...it's always cooler to read about them than to experience them. I contemplate and daydream about things far too much, its incredibly useful if you have to work insane hours and your doing a job that requires an IQ of like 5. Physically your there, but mentally, yeah, not even close lol. It's neat because by doing this it seems to modify perception of time, time speeds up quite abit. A 10 hr shift? felt like a three to me. It's a great thing to be able to do if you can do it...my problem is I've done it way too much and now I do it naturally....all the time. And let me say that it is sooo not cool. It's like have friggin ADD. "K genitive case, so that means I have to change the ending of this word too.........hey look, a spec of dust...." It's quite the pain not being able to stay focused for any length of time. Behaviors backed by the force of habit, powerful little critters they be. And since this one has been very well fed over the past few years...it'll take some time to kill. I'm a working on it though. So long as I keep developing that association between hearing Russian and purging my mind of thought, I'll be okay. 1 person has voted this message useful | ||||||
