This is my entry into the World of Tac. Please be gentle :).

Spanish

My main goal for the year. I had a couple of false starts with this language, so it's about time I tackle this one.

Current level: Beginner. While I can understand some of it in written form, I don't get farther than "Buenos Dias" when on holiday in Spain. And since a lot of people in Spain only speak Spanish, this needs to change.

Goal: I don't fully understand the different levels used on this site but Upper Intermediate sounds about right.

Method: I'll start with a combination of Assimil's "Spaans Zonder Moeite (Sans Peine) and Michel Thomas. Because I'm a relative beginner at the whole self-study thing, I'll keep an eye on the forum for new methods and such. As I can get TVE on the TV at home, I'll try that to train my listening skills.

French

I learned this language in school from age 10 to 18, at a rate of about 5 hours a week. It's one of my countries official languages, and a great asset when job hunting.

Current Level: It's hard to put a level on my current ability. My reading ability is probably around Upper Intermediate/Low Basic Fluency. Unfortunately it goes downhill from there. Listening is Intermediate (I can follow basic programs like newscasts without much difficulty, more specialized programs can be a challenge.). My active knowledge of the language is high beginner at best.

Goal: Getting everything up to par with my reading abilities.

Method: I'll be starting with Michel Thomas, as I find it a great way to activate passive knowledge. I have digged up my "Principes de Grammaire" and "Lexique Thématique" from High School and plan to use them to relearn the grammar and vocabulary I forgot since then. I have about 7 French channels on my TV so listening practice shouldn't be hard.

German

Belgians third language, and an interesting language too. Time to get revenge on an awfull teacher in high school

Current Level: After 3 years in high school I picked up some notions of the language, but, as stated, my teacher was a perfect advertisement for self-study. I have no structured understanding of the language, but know enough to get by when in Germany. But I do speak the occasional Jean-Marie Pfaff Deutch.

Goal: Get some structure in my German, practise grammar and extend my vocabulary. High intermediate is probably a good goal.

Method: Again Michel Thomas to start, along with Assimil. Watch German TV.

Turkish

I don't plan to start this language right away. I'll see how my progress in the other three is before commiting to this one. I did see Assimil's Turkish course in the library, and I don't know how long I can control myself.

About this blog

This blog will be multilingual (English/French at first, I hope to add German and Spanish soon.). Comments, help and corrections are appreciated. (And if someone wants to practice his Dutch, comments in that language are also welcome.)
