I'm making this log here for the purpose of guilting myself into continuing my study of Korean. Howeer, that does not mean I do not appreciate advice and words of encouragement.
About a week ago, I developed the idea of (Read: Was threatened into) learning Korean. Where I live in Vancouver, a very large percentage of the population speaks Korean as their first language. To be honest, I don't believe I have gone a single day all my life without hearing Korean being spoken around me.
I have no illusions of being able to speak Korean at a near-native level in a short amount of time. I know with Japanese that learning an East Asian language as a native English speaker is a difficult ordeal. That being said, I have set myself a few impossible goals
Quote:
Goals by February 28th, 2010
- Acquire a small library of native Korean materials (Advice would be great on this one. I am unable to order online, but am freely able to travel the Metro Vancouver area to buy from just about anywhere)
- Be able to hold my own in a simple, casual-level conversation.
- Be able to read any average-level Children's book without major difficulties.
- Switch to a Korean-Korean dictionary, or at least use one more than a Korean-English |

I recognise that these goals may be lofty for what is not quite 3 months, but I work best when striving towards the "impossible."
My daily study will go something like:
- 1.5 Hours of listening to Korean. Currently, it's...well...the Koreanclass101 podcasts. I will move to native podcasts as early as I am able to. Until then, this will suffice.
- 1 to 2 chapters of "Elementary Korean". This has no time limit. I will work until I feel my focus slipping, and then stop.
- Scriptorium of Korean sentences that I have been able to fully understand. Again, there is no time limit.
- Conversation and consultation with Native Korean speakers, 5 days a week, length varying on how much I feel that I need on that day. I have multiple people helping me (Currently 4), so I hope to see a broad view of single topics and avoid artifacts from various dialects.
It is my hope that this will amount to multiple hours of daily study and a relatively quick ascent to conversational fluency. My knowledge of Japanese should help greatly with this task.
Despite starting a week ago, I will call this day, December 12th 2009, "Day 1" of my studies, due to complications with the flu.

You have a good plan, don't get your hopes of even getting past the intermediate stage in Korean in the short of time. On Korean Class 101, make sure you check out the pronunciation guide. There's five lessons or so. It's really needed, because the consonants are pronounced in different areas of the mouth compared to English.

Honestly, I don't expect to. But I find I work best when I'm trying towards something impossible. So I'll set the goal of it, and we'll see what happens.
Day 1 Summary
Thanks to further complications with the flu and not being able to breath, I only managed to get in half of the studying I would have liked.
- Completed Chapter 5 of Elementary Korean
- KoreanClasss101 #11- #15
- No scriptorium or consultation
Once I am able to go two sentences without having a cough attack, I hope to seriously ramp this up.
