Very often in language learning I incorporate also research about other varieties of the language that I'm learning, for example - I'm studying French, well, of course Standard French, and very often I do a research how for example Canadian French differs from Standard or how Swiss French is different from Standard French - this includes vocabulary, rules of pronunciation, etc. So I thought that I could ask for advice about resources where could I find information how Austrian German is different from Standard German - as I said this includes vocabulary (until this moment I have found only some good sites where there are only 20-30 words) and rules of pronunciation (if there are any), because it's obvious that Austrian German is a bit different from Standard German, because when I was in Passau I understood a lot what locals say, but when I got to Vienna, the only thing I could do there was order a coffee since I didn't really understand what people talk and couldn't start normal conversations.

As a Berliner I find Austrian German both annoying and charming. If it makes you feel any better, I don't know the meaning of most of the 7000 or so Austricacisms listed in the Liste von Austriazismen, but I usually manage to understand Austrians, because I used to live in Bavaria.

Thanks so much. Of course I won't learn those 7000 words right this way, but I find it very useful to be familiar with them.

Austrian German is not that different, at least if Austrians stick to standard language and don't use dialect. It is perhaps as different from North or Central German as English speech in Atlanta, Georgia is different from that of Washington DC.

okay, regarding "r" in Austrian German - i've been thinking about learning German and been glancing at the pronunciations - i've been listening to Austrian radio all day and i've noticed that the alveolar trill (r) is not always fully pronounced - and when it's not I can't quite place what it sounds like. Is it just me or is that a correct observation? Perhaps they are just talking fast...
