Today I did just over one hour of French. I was a litle frustrated with my work on the difference between que/qui, and I also had difficulty with lequels, auquel, duquel etc. This left me feeling a little deflated but at the same time, I'm sure it can be cracked with a little more effort.

Edit: the following day, I did one and a half hours of French at French conversation class, although I struggled a bit, as the topic was finance.

20 minutes of French today on prepositions. I struggled with the fact that you use "en" for living in or coming from a place. Exercises in my French grammar book 72 was particularly troublesome

I am a bit surprised: OK for living in - Je vis en France.
and I'm going to England - Je vais en Angleterre.
OK for I'm travelling in Europe - Je voyage en Europe.
but for coming from... je viens DE Russie. And I can't find an example with EN that would fit!
Could you give me one, please?
(I'm maybe a bit tired...!?)

Yes sorry, I noticed that there were other words, but only after I'd put this post. Sorry, long day :-)

Yesterday I got one hour of French done. Two twenty minute reading sessions of Assimil "Frans zonder moite", then a twenty minute listening exercise on the same title. Basically, I live in Brussels, so have been using French materials to strengthen my Dutch, and Dutch materials to strengthen my French.

I have also noticed that the best time to do listening exercises (at least for me) is at night, when I'm too tired to do complex grammar and writing exercises, but still awake enough to listen.

Yesterday was quite a day for me :-) I experienced two language "firsts".

I was covering a discussion panel on the position of women in Islam, and switched to the French translation headphones. A multilingual colelague of mine a few weeks ago suggested this, and I've been doing it ever since. Yesterday, as I listened, an Italian atheist gave a speech and I listened to the French translation. She said some rude things about religion in general, and as I leapt back in offence, I suddenly realised...I had been offended in a foreign language and understood it!

Later that night, I went to French conversation class for 1 and a half hours. The topic for our discussion was cars. I forget exactly what it was, but one of the people made a comment that made me laugh. There, I had just experienced a first instance of being made to laugh/understand a joke in a foreign language.

All in all a super day!

I did one hour of French on Friday and another hour on Saturday night. I am using "Assimil Frans Zonder Moite" as my course. I am now in the "active" phase. I have found listening to the exercises very useful and helpful.
