One advice I'd give ChiaBrain and xandreax (if and when he comes back to Portuguese) is to stop worrying too much about the "o" and "e" that are pronounced as "u" and "i".
Why do I say that? Because it seems to affect your writing.
With time you will just get a feeling for these things and you will not need to worry. Besides, saying "obrigado" instead of "obrigadu" will not stand in the way of communicating. Doing the opposite (i.e. worrying about the 'o's and 'e's) will lead to things that would make you sound weird, like saying "imirgîncia" instead of "emergência". |

I actually have few problems with these though and I don't worry about the pronunciation so much that it would get in the way of my communication. >>>emergência : I would always say the "ê" similar to "ay" as in "day"

Wow, I really admire your motivation to learn Portuguese. ^^
How well do you think you are now, after all those Pimsleur/grammar lessons?

Well I haven't learned enough grammar actually or even vocabulary to have a conversation although when I do read something I understand quite a lot just because much of the grammar and vocabulary is similar to Spanish... but in order for me to remember verb tenses and all that I feel I need to learn the patterns which is why I focus on grammar books. Once I went through a couple of those for Spanish I started getting confident in my writing and speaking (also learned a lot of vocab by that time). Unfortunately once again I'll have to stop learning Portuguese because university classes are starting again and they don't have Portuguese so I'll be focusing on French and Italian. I will come back to it though as Portuguese is a really awesome language.
