Just writing down what I'm doing currently to smooth out the rough edges of my French, which is pretty linguistically lopsided.
Why do I say lopsided? Well, I can read it dramatically better than I can write it (if suddenly I had to read everything in French, I'd be OK). But I can speak it better or about as well as I can understand it (though my verbal comprehension is improving). So my main immediate goal is to get better at understanding it when spoken, as well as continuing to get more exposure through reading and listening. I've got a dual-language book at the moment which I read sometimes, and I'm going through the Assimil course "Francés perfeccionamiento" (it's in Spanish). The pace is probably a bit too gradual, but to supplement things, I've got my operating system and most of my programs in French, and I try to browse Web sites in French when a version is available. This actually helps considerably. I'm stuck with the feeling that my French is incomplete because of not being more fluent despite being able to read so much. So I'm trying to fix that :) I've also got to incorporate more practice with other people into my routine somehow. I should probably have a time line for this goal, but I don't. Hmm, so I read a couple other language logs, and they have fancy bold sections outlining the approaches. I'm going to try this too. As well as give an update on my activities the last few days.
Goal: Achieve Advanced Fluency in French Which means: a. Being able to read general French without the need to refer to a dictionary, except in cases where even a native speaker might not know the word. In addition, possess a slightly above-average knowledge of linguistic and technical (primarily computer-related) terminology and jargon. b. Being to speak French as per the following milestone #4. Milestones: 1. Able to understand 90% of spoken French, even if - to some degree - the speaker is unclear or there are other obstacles. 2. Able to hold a reasonably fluid conversation in French, not taking more than 2 seconds to search for a word or expression when necessary. 3. Able to produce written French at an above-average level (basically, to have some capability of using different words for different shades of meaning when several are available). 4. Able to speak French and only search for words in situations resembling those in which a native speaker might do the same. 5. Able to speak French without noticeable/distracting accent. 6. Future goal: Be completely or near-indiscernable, at least in speaking profiency, from a native French speaker. Methods: 1. Reading/writing/speaking: Assimil, Francés Perfeccionamiento 2. Reading: Contes Français, A Dual-Language Book 3. Reading/writing: Skype (need to find more people for this; any French speakers want to help me? :) Send a PM. I can help with English and Spanish.) 4. Maintenance: Using Windows, Firefox, and other computer programs in French 5. Writing: Writing my language logs in French first (after this one). 6. Comfortability: Preferring French-language materials over English-language ones (Wikipedia, tutorials, definitions, Google, etc.) Using Firefox in French makes this a little easier because Web sites detect me as French speaker. * After I'm done with Assimil, I intend to use www.rfi.fr and potentially www.livemocha.com to enhance my French skills. Deadline: Hmm, how about June 30, 2010 for milestone #4? I might set individual deadlines later, but not for now... My first activity update is next! Voici mon premier envoi en français (dans ce journal). Il ne sera pas très long, mais c'est OK.
Depuis le 15 septembre, j'ai/suis : -Lit plus du livre Contes Français -Lit les notes dans la 23e leçon d'Assimil. -Entendu l'audio dans la 24e leçon d'Assimil. -Reçu un résultat de 80% pour l'examen "débutant" (beginner) de french.about.com -Reçu 76% pour l'examen intermédiaire. -Reçu 54% pour l'avancé. -Entendu l'edition 20/09/2009 22:00 de RFI (www.rfi.fr). Les résultats des examens étaient un peu étonnants ; il paraît qu'il faut beaucoup de faire! J'ai compris au moins pourquoi mes réponses incorrectes ont éte incorrectes. C'est quelque-chose, je crois. Voici l'anglais : Here's my first French post (in this journal). It won't very long, but that's OK.
