Hey, try this one! "Der Spiegel" is doing a quiz on the origins of some German words. It's a lot of fun and the quiz doesn't take any time at all.

The quiz is not that bad, though they made one mistake: the German word 'Kiosk' doesn't come from Turkish but rather from Persian. Anyway, fun quiz.

Echt? Wow. Were there any that surprised you? I kept getting the snide remarks, "close, but no banana, noch'n Versuch".
This is just a side comment, but I think the origins of words in languages would be a course in an of itself (!) I think speakers of many languages can really appreciate the topic. it's amazing what you can learn about your own language.

sunja, i didn't like the replies as well, but I found them annoying and too much smalltalk. Etymology is a nice subject.

I'm sure I did worse than you did and I still got 9 out of 10 :D The ones I got right I guessed on and the ones I thought I knew I got wrong. I guess that's why I find the quiz interesting. Europeans more attuned to different languages than I.

I'm sure they did it that way because they didn't want people to feel stupid after taking the quiz and getting 2 or 3 out of 10 correct. They might not come back and read Spiegel On-Line again.
Etymology is an interesting subject. I know a lot about the etymology of English words but apparently, not much about German etymology. I really only knew two of the answers, guessing aside.
