So I went to Spain for two weeks.
Pineda de Mar, near Calella and Barcelona, on the Costa Brava. It was a blast. But everybody spoke Catalan. And everything was in Catalan. Kind of annoying for somebody who wants to learn Spanish.
But...there were French people EVERYWHERE! Where ever you went, you heard French! All the people at our camping site were French! I have never talked this much French all my life, and it was a lot of fun. Met a lot of people.
Made a lot of new friends, some who I'm going to visit in October (in France, to refresh my French).
Anybody had a similar experience?

Regards,
Ilhan

I've not had a similar experience but I've heard the Catalan country is very much a mix of several languages! Did it really hinder your Spanish? Out of interest, what ratio/percentage would you put on how much you heard Catalan/Spanish spoken daily? (excluding French)?

I am not quite sure, I couldn't like, give you a ratio in numbers. But all the signs I saw in Pineda de Mar were in Catalan, and almost all the natives spoke it. You could talk Spanish with them and get a response in Spanish, but everything was kind of Catalan based I think. All the signs in Barcelona were in Catalan (or, bilingual I think, in Spanish and Catalan), but I think all the announcments in the Barcelona metro were in Catalan.

I found it a little disappointing from the language experience point of view, but as said talking in Spanish was not a problem (everybody understood it).

Ilhan

You really shouldn't go to the Costa Brava if you're looking to practise your Spanish. Like you said, Catalan is spoken over there and besides, it's a major tourist area.
