So English is not a mandatory subject in school in China then?
I thought it was but only based on what somebody from Beijing told me; perhaps she was some kind of special case.

Perhaps it varies around the country, or perhaps it's only mandatory in academic 'grammar schools'/gymnasium /high school?

Or maybe it is same as Japan where people study it for YEARS and still can just about understand a super simple question.. (can hardly blame them, the difference is massive compared with Euro langs...)
