I have a problem. I really, really am interested in Russia and Russian culture, and as a classical musician, I would absolutely LOVE to play and study music in Russia. However, I am an EXTREMELY picky eater. The only think I dislike about Russian culture (so far) is the cuisine. Has anyone else experienced something like this? Is there a way around this problem?

Learning the language and living in the country doesn't mean you have to eat Russian cooked meals. I live in Australia. My Hungarian friends eat Hungarian meals (actually.... so do I, hahaha). My Italian friends eat Italian meals, and so on. It just means you prepare the food yourself, as opposed to having someone else make it.

You may grow to like some aspects of it. I've gotten accustomed to a lot of German food -- like putting sauce on a lot of things that Americans would just leave dry, or putting butter on bread and then cheese or salami. That took a while for me to get used to that. The sweets also took some getting used to. American sweets do taste different. (What are Russian sweets like, anyway?)
I'm sure it's the other way around, too. When people come to America/or travel to other host countries they have preferences that are hard to change at frist. There could be a dozen threads with titles like "love the language, hate the footwear!"

I wouldn't say I love Japanese, but I do think that I at least "like" the language. However, the food is just not for me. I have a hard time with seafood of most kinds, and some of the more well-known cuisine of Japan just doesn't sit well with me for some reason. I just don't see the appeal of okonomiyaki...

I know a lot of people who LOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOVE okonomiyaki, but just as you I don't, well, find it particularly interesting. Whew, I'm relieved!

Okonomiyaki is just a Japanese pizza, right? I've never had it. I just checked the recipe. Hmm, cabbage leaves mixed in with a pancake-like pizza dough. Interesting.
I'll try anything once - even takoyaki
when in Rome...

Personally okonomiyaki reminds me more of a dried omelette than a pizza.
