Hi,
Anyone have experience studying Arabic in Syria (Damascus or other)? I've studied for a few months in Jordan (Qasid Institute -- wonderful place -- too pricey for round two), but looking for cheap alternative. I'd like to go for ~6 months, and really live cheaply.
There's the IFPO, U. of Damascus, The Ma'Had...perhaps a few others. Anyone have experience?
Looking at MSA and 'amiyya.

ic, i can speak from personal experience that the teaching at the university of damascus is very good, although it is somewhat pricey compared to other places (about $400 per month). uni of damascus only teaches fusha though, i'm afraid, so if you are interested in learning 'amiyya in a structured teaching environment you will have to look elsewhere. ifpo has a good reputation but, as i understand, is even more expensive and tends to cater more for diplomats, career professionals and the like...
i know a couple of people who have studied the ma'had in damascus and their reviews have been overwhelmingly negative... poor teaching formats based on rote learning, slow class progress, poor materials, etc
if uni of damascus and ifpo is too expensive for you, a good alternative would be a place called abu nour. it's an islamic institute which teaches arabic, but you do not have to be muslim to attend. i'm not sure exactly how much it costs but courses run on a two-monthly basis and are reportedly quite good... in fusha of course

I am also considering to go to Damascus to attend a language school and would like to know about other people's experiences. I have learned some Arabic in the past and have even visited a language school in Cairo for one month, but still I am very far from any kind of fluency. I am afraid I won't be able to spend more time in Damascus than two to four weeks.
I have been thinking of AG Arabisch in Damaskus http://www.agarabischindamaskus.com/ which is principally meant for students from German speaking countries. The costs of € 475 for a four weeks course including accomodation seem very low to me. But maybe there are other schools that I might consider. Having only German speaking students would probably mean that outside the course only German is spoken. However when I was in Cairo I spoke English, French, German, Italian, Spanish and Portuguese with my fellow students but never Arabic.
