Exactly! However, that one seems to get baaaad reviews.

I found this site with links, reviews, news, etc., for all of you who understand Swedish, http://www.e-reader.se/

I also have iRex DR1000S. It's not that bad after all but the battery life is ridiculously poor.

I'm not sure if Kindle supports third party dictionaries. iRex, Bookeen and others do support Mobipocket dictionaries.

You might want to get a Palm (or PocketPC) device like Zire 71. You can buy it used for about $25. Then install Mobipocket reader on it, buy a Mobipocket dictionary and everytime you don't know a word just tap it with the stylus.

When you buy a dictionary make sure it supports headword search though.

Yeah that seems to be the one to get.
Biggest screen, handwriting recognition and format agnostic.

Where did you two get yours from?

The new Sony one seems to include note-taking, but I'm not sure.

I bought my DR1000S back in November 2008 from a local vendor.

You might want to visit MobileRead forums at http://www.mobileread.com/forums to learn more about e-ink devices.

I bought mine from here: http://www.iliadreader.co.uk/

It is the UK distributor - but they ship world-wide. Mine was sent out the same day I ordered it - and delivery within the EU is 3 days.

I looked at the Sony 700 - but rejected it because the screen they have used is not as good as any other eBook reader. They do use eInk but have added a layer on top of it that makes it reflective and therefore almost useless for long term reading. It is a shame, since the Sony 505 shows that Sony can indeed make great eBook readers.

I have about 180 french books on my kindle, and my default kindle dictionary is the Merriam-Webster's French-English Translation Dictionary.

http://www.amazon.com/Merriam-Websters-French-English-Transl ation-Dictionary-ebook/dp/B002ROKQU6/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&m=AG 56TWVU5XWC2&s=digital-text&qid=1267488381&sr=1-1

This is a lot easier than looking up words in a separate book. I move the cursor to a word that I don't know and I get the definition at the bottom of the page.

French public domain ebooks sites:

1 Has anybody tried using a parallel novel, as used in LR, on his device?

2 Are all of these devices as controlling as Kindle? Are there any that basically let me put whatever I want on them, without worrying about coast guard deleting my files?

3 Are there any pop-up dictionaries for Japanese that I could use?

It's too bad that devices that can handle pdfs are not that great.

Have you considered a new iPad for pdfs? I'm sure the battery life will not be quite as good as e-ink, but it shouldn't have any problems displaying them correctly.
