This might be a stretch, but these types of things do exist in English-hungry Asia. Does anyone know of any intensive Chinese language courses in China or Taiwan (meaning 5 day per week, several hours per day) where the school offers a tuition waiver if you do English language tutoring on the side for them? Or something similar but maybe not quite as great.

I think there may be some, but I do not have the details. At one point, a Chinese grad student friend of mine was trying to convince me to quit studying for my Bachelors degree to move to China to do this sort of thing, but I didn't really listen to the details, as I wanted to get my degree. If you search though, I think that you can find something though.

I think Taiwan only had the kind of visa deal needed for such jobs with New Zealand and some Asian countries. Otherwise, I've seen job offers by Chinese universities with this kind of deal - they usually wanted a native speaker with a (any!) Bachelor's degree, though.

Someone recently told me that it's now legal to work for a limited number of hours per week on a student visa in China. I haven't tried to confirm that. But if true, you could probably cover your tuition/living expenses with 10ish hours English tutoring work per week.

Just sign up for a university Chinese course in China.

You can easily find private work if you put your-self out there. You could easily make
100rmb + an hour. Also look at the Confucius institute. You might even be able to get a scholarship from them. There's also some scholarships from the Chinese government.

Hey, you don't even need to work or get a scholarship. Just work a few months in Canada
save up the money and enrol at a university here in China. It's not expensive.
