There is a parallel thread about iPhones/iPads, but Android is gaining a decent market share so it would be interesting to hear what your favourite apps are for language learning.
Here are some of mine (all free): AnkiDroid - My favourite one by far. The Android version of Anki. Works excellently - unfortunately doesn't synch with servers, but I only use my smartphone for studying (never my computer) so this isn't an issue. StumbleUpon - sign up on their website and set your content language to the target language. Then when signed in on this app you will see some of the best the Internet has to offer (videos & websites), mostly in that language. Great when you have some time to kill but are feeling too lazy to do some studying of any kind, but still want some random exposure to the target language. Aldiko e-book reader - I have a great free e-book converter in Linux (called Calibre) so I have added a bunch of foreign content to my Android library to read when I have time. Google Goggles - This is absolutely amazing (albeit "cheating" in terms of language learning). You point your phone to some text (menu for example), use this app and it will scan it and give you a Google Translate rendering of it. Everyone knows how bad GTranslate is, but when you need to get the gist of some foreign text quickly it's a huge help. Google Translate - Same as above, but you can speak to your phone rather than type. The Google Translate apps would be useful to beginner learners, but not advanced ones. Free dictionaries - Most languages have free dictionaries in the "Market". These are basic, but handy. What I have done that works out much better is put a shortcut to my favourite online dictionary on my main screen (in Hungarian it's Sztaki szótár - conveniently with a smartphone version of their website). Language specific apps - usually searching for your target language name results in some interesting stuff. Each language would have its own best apps, but if anyone wants to share them, or especially apps useful for several languages, please do! :) Translatable interface - this isn't an app, but it's handy to change the entire OS in an instant. I'm looking for language specific apps for arabic or persian. No matter the language
though, the apps for specific languages are very basic and are not very useful. Have you guys encountered apps for advanced learners in any language? I'd be happy if I got an app in which you can build phrases. There are many of them "sentence builders" for English, but none for the languages I am interested in. 1 person has voted this message useful | |

irishpolyglot: You might want to reevaluate AnkiDroid. It syncs fine now.
