I had never heard of this extremely learned Russian until the other day, but I imagine he is well known to those interested in linguistics and folklore. From his CV he seems to be fluent in Russian, German, English, Icelandic and Dutch. I would imagine that he speaks other languages.
Liberman CV
Liberman is an expert on English etymology. I find it interesting that non-natives like Liberman and Otto Jespersen, a Dane, have been able to contribute so much to the study of English. I suppose that knowing many languages gives them an advantage over a native scholar of English who would normally only be familiar with French, Latin and possibly Greek.

Anatoly Liberman was born in 1937 and is a university professor in the United States of German, Dutch and the Scandinavian languages as well as a translater of Russian potery. He is of Russian descent, so he speaks at least Russian, English, German, Dutch and some Scandinavian languages.
