Hello. I'm new here. I came across this forum and it's wonderful. I love languages. However, I don't understand why there are so many people out there bashing polyglots. What's wrong with learning other languages?

I haven't either, but then again, I tend to think the word "basher" is overused, if not just plain misused.

Most everyone I know is fascinated with the fact that I can speak more than one language, once they find out. But I tend not to talk all that much about it unless someone asks (what I do for work, for example).

Why do you think people are "bashing polyglots"? Polyglots know so many languages and we get jealous of course, that is why.

Rather than making a general accusation of "bashing polyglots" can you please show us
some examples of threads wherein people who "know so many languages" are "bashed"
because of it by "jealous" people?

I cannot think of a single example of it here.

The only remotely related thing I have seen is arguments about whether any particular
person is "fluent" or not. Somebody makes claims they are fluent, somebody else says
"no you aren't" and we end up with another endless debate about what constitutes
fluency.

That, however, is very different from polyglot "bashing".

That was my silly attempt of being sarcastic :D Sorry.
