I was wondering if anyone could point me in the direction of some entertaining TV shows
or even anime styled shows that would help enrich my listening practice? I tried tudu (I think it is called that), however here in the UK it tends to load extremely slow which is rather annoying. 1 person has voted this message useful | |||

You might want to try Youku as well. The sites tend to load faster when it's the middle
of the night in China. If you want to purchase DVD's with English subtitles (that are legal, haha), you can try www.yesasia.com. I would suggest specific TV shows, but I wouldn't know what genre you prefer, etc. Another option would be to install a program such as UUSee, which has uploaded millions of TV shows and movies broken down into categories (genre, language, year). It is very efficient, but you need to be able to read Mandarin to get around it. 2 persons have voted this message useful | |||

Excellent, I didn't consider the time I went onto the website may affect loading times haha! UUSee sounds quite good though, but I'm only at the basic stages of learning unfortunately. Genre wise, off the top of my head, I usually prefer American TV shows such as The Big Bang Theory and action related genres appeal to me...Saying that I have watched some martial arts clips and Japanese anime dubbed in Mandarin on Youtube and I enjoyed watching that too, but I've been told Youtube isn't accessible in China, which may speak for the lack of uploads there... 1 person has voted this message useful | |||

I'm currently in Beijing on vacation, and unfortunately, there is no Youtube access (or
much other access, which is frustrating me). Have you considered watching American shows dubbed in Mandarin? Sitcoms in Mandarin tend to require a certain level of knowledge of the language... I would think the most popular one here is called "Jia You Er Nv" (家有儿女 ). There are many action TV series as well. However, the most popular ones are historical legends, and they speak barely understandable Mandarin, so I'd suggest you watch an English-subbed version first. Legend of the Condor Heroes (She Diao Ying Xiong Zhuan/射 雕英雄传) is a good one. I'm pretty sure that one is on Youtube somewhere. 风声 is a great war movie. I suggest you try UUSee anyway... just randomly click around the buttons and eventually you'll figure out where everything is. That would be frustrating for me too, I love watching videos on Youtube, I actually never
considered watching the American ones dubbed, I'll have to have a look for some! I also checked out two of the shows you mentioned, 家有儿女 is pretty fun to watch, seems quite similar to a show I watched whilst I was in hospital called My Family or something similar and I really enjoyed watching some of 射雕英雄传, saved that one to my Youtube favorites! Although I'm having problems loading Uusee at the moment, probably due to the time, I think I'll give that another go tomorrow afternoon. 1 person has voted this message useful | |||

Does anyone know of any Chinese shows that are the same as something in the U.S.?
I'm watching some of the Chinese Idol, wondering if there's anything else. There was a Chinese Amazing Race, but the first season had no chinese people, lol, and i've already watched the 2nd season. I don't watch a lot of reality TV (assuming that's what you want from the examples you provided) but here are two sites that have lots of variety shows. The first one is info only (I think, I haven't exactly browsed through it in detail) but you can find the names of lots of reality TV. The second is a streaming site targeted towards English-speakers.
Oh, and I'm not sure if by Chinese Idol you mean 中国达人秀, which is basically China's Got Talent. If you can read Chinese: This is an excellent source for mainland Chinese reality TV shows. If you can't read Chinese and don't mind watching Taiwanese reality TV: SugoiIdeas has LOADS of variety shows as well as subbed TW dramas. As for dramas, I can only think of three off the top of my head for now. 无限生机/Wu Xian Sheng Ji - Kinda like ER. 重案六组/Zhong An Liu Zu - The typical cop show where each ep = different case. It has four seasons. 丑女无敌/Chou Nv Wu Di - Chinese Ugly Betty. And as a tribute to the original purpose of this thread lol, here's another comedy: 武林外传/Wu Lin Wai Zhuan - It's known in mainland China for being absolutely hilarious; however it requires a deep knowledge of Chinese history and culture as it's sort of a "mockumentary" minus the documentary part. If you really want to test your Chinese knowledge, try it. xD I personally find the most hilarious mainland Chinese comedies on stage, not TV. If you search on Youtube or Tudou for the Annual Chinese New Year's programs (called 春节联欢晚会) you will find that aside from dancing/singing, there are lots of plays. These plays are either really melodramatic (usually in tribute to things like teachers, parents) or extremely hilarious. They are really funny, and a lot of them, I don't think require a lot of cultural knowledge (although knowing a few idioms might help.) 3 persons have voted this message useful |
