Here is a link to a movie trailer of the movie ‘Casa de Mi Padre’ where totally-non-Spanish-speaking actor Will Ferrell plays the lead role in a new Spanish language movie. He memorised his lines and pronunciation. To me, a beginner in Spanish, he sounds pretty good.

Any comments by native Spanish speakers?

Not a native Spanish speaker, but I want to see this movie. I'm not a huge Will Ferrell fan, but that looks like great fun. Thanks for sharing the link.

Nearly everyone in the comments section for that Yahoo article had something negative to say, but I personally love this sort of stuff (i.e., cross-lingual productions) and would love to see more of it, as this is relatively uncharted territory (at least for native Anglophones).

It'll be interesting to see how this goes over for non-English speaking audiences (ie Spanish speakers). I imagine the humor is squarely aimed at the American audience, which may be lost on others.

^ Well, the project involved multiple Hispanic collaborators, including script translators and famous actors, so I'd imagine it's not quite the alienating divide that would have occurred if they had simply input the English script into Google Translate and went along with whatever it spit out.

True, but from the clip I saw, the humor is decidedly Will Ferrell. I'm interested in seeing how his particular brand of humor goes over. I've sat in theaters in Spain that showed Anchorman and Old School with Spanish translations (presumably done by competent, professional translators/subtitlers). It was an interesting experience. I embarrassed myself more than once by being the only person guffawing in the audience.

I hate Will Ferrell so much. The only redeeming feature about this film will probably be Gael García Bernal and Diego Luna. And that pretty girl. In fact everything but Will Ferrell, really.

My manic hatred aside, this sort of movie reminds me of "Non Ti Muovere" (2004) where Penélope Cruz apparently learned Italian for the role and by many accounts, spoke it flawlessly in the film.

Granted Spanish and Italian's linguistic proximity will have helped, but I'm interested to hear from native (or seasoned) Italian speakers as to how she sounds. I think she did a good job?

His accent is quite good all things considered. I haven't seen it, but I can imagine that the film will be the same as his others, i.e. not very good but not the worst thing you can do with 90 minutes of your life. Nevertheless, I think that it takes some cojones to make a film entirely in a language you can't speak.
