Tatoeba.org is an online searchable database of example sentences in a vast number of languages. I use it often, as it is perfect for finding example sentences to put with new vocabulary words into SRS software. However, I never hear anyone else on HTLAL talking about tatoeba.org. Why is that?

I've never heard of it before. It looks pretty neat at first glance. I'll need to check it out in more detail but thanks for sharing!

The site isn't particularly user friendly imho.
But there are quite a few decent premade decks in anki, some that I personally use, that use audio and sentences from there. 3 persons have voted this message useful | |

I prefer using native sources though, so at least 50% of tthe sentences I add nowadys are from native sources, and that's why I don't use premade decks. Having another good source of example sentences is always a good thing, thank you. :) Another good sources of Japanese sentences: dic.yahoo.co.jp (The Japanese-English dictionary often has some decent sentences, though the English translations may be a bit iffy) eow.alc.co.jp (These are often a little bit long, but useful nonetheless) Edited by stifa on 26 January 2013 at 5:05pm 1 person has voted this message useful | |

I use tatoeba.org, and I don't have any problem with the UI. Maybe the search is a little weird sometimes with Finnish inflections. I'm not sure if there's a way to force the search to only find exact matches. If seems to find everything with about the same spelling.
It's gotten more useful for Finnish just in the last year or so, I think. 1 person has voted this message useful | |

I think people don't mention it at HTLAL because this is a forum for people who love languages and what could be more distracting and more tempting than a database full of sentences in all various languages, served up on a silver platter? For wanderers like myself it's quite deadly. I never get any work done!
I think I would still use Tatoeba for Japanese because I have to do sentence mining when I'm studying a particular piece of Japanese grammar and I need a fast context. The sentences are great for that. 4 persons have voted this message useful | |

I just learned about this site the other day. It's great when I hear a word during the
day but can't remember the whole sentence it was used in. I look the word up on tatoeba to get context and throw it in Anki. I wish I had known it existed earlier. 1 person has voted this message useful | |

I heard about it at an IRC network. There are some sentences for Georgian and I want to
see them grow. As for the other languages with more resources, I'd rather stick to the ones I already have. 1 person has voted this message useful |
