If you were trying to describe the side effects of a medication to a friend (so colloquially), what word would you use?

Nebenwirkung.
What could you do to find out for yourself? The first thing that came to my mind was to do a Google image search. If you try it, you'll see that only Nebenwirkung brings up pictures related to illness, pharmacy, medicine etc. What else? Another option is to use an online corpus, in particular one which shows collocations. For instance wortschatz.uni-leipzig.de - look at the collocations graphs at the bottom of the page for each of the four words, they're pretty different. Then of course there's linguee which is pretty helpful as well. I don't mean to imply that you shouldn't ask the meaning of words, not at all... who knows what interesting discussion will ensue, but it's always good to have a few tools at hand to find out for yourself. 2 persons have voted this message useful | |

Nope, the standard boilerplate for medications is "Zu Risiken und Nebenwirkungen lesen Sie die Packungsbeilage und fragen Sie Ihren Arzt oder Apotheker."
