These are fine as quick answers, like "Have you managed to find him?" - "[No,] he had left."
Without such a context these are spectacularly wrong too.

The course director had recommended that I repeat the class when I went to see him.
Is the above ok?
The "had recommended" can go with "I went"? Or should it be "when I had gone..."?

If what I remember from grammar class is correct, I think it should be either of the following sentences:
The course director recommended that I repeat the class when I went to see him.
The course director recommended that I repeat the class when I had gone to see him.
When you say "the course director had recommended... when I went to see him", you are saying that the director recommended it before you went to meet him.
That is, just after the director gave the recommendation, you went to see him.
It goes without saying that I would like to be corrected if I am wrong. :-)
