What do the language levels mean?

For awhile now I've been aware of some sort of system that tells fluency, A1, B2 C etc but I have no idea who's system it is or how to find out which one of those I am in French. I tell people I am mostly fluent in French, but have no idea actually. I am well beyond most programs and classes, but not at a native level of speaking. I still have some difficulty with listening and picking out words but that is improving dramatically lately. So any advice?

The system I believe you refer to is from the Common European Framework of References for Languages, almost always abbreviated to CEFR. Here's the Counsel of Europe's website about it: CEFR. Hope this helps.

More specifically, they have a detailed checklist of abilities here which should help you to place yourself.
