I still think they are a rarity outside of Hong Kong and China. I have met one fellow Canadian who has no Chinese ancestry being able to hold a pretty good conversation with me. Surprisingly , he has a pretty close to native accent too. He was around Cantonese speakers a lot in high school and he also studied in Hong Kong for six months.

I've yet to see a Japanese person speak fluent Cantonese. I have one Japanese friend who is trying to learn it but it seems hard from what she says. There is Higuchi Asuka , she usually has special appearances in Hong Kong movies but I don't think she is completely fluent.

Of course it would be rare outside of Hong Kong and China. In order to learn they need to be in the Cantonese environment.

I've seen countless Indians and Pakistani in Hong Kong who can speak native level Cantonese.

I have also taken the liberty to post on Youtube videos of Non-Chinese speaking native or excellent Cantonese.

Wow, you're the one who posted these videos ? I've actually seen all of them before. I never thought the person who uploaded these videos would reply to my thread ! I'm honoured.

Sharon is just amazing. I remember I saw a clip of her speaking Mandarin with a Cantonese accent. She is truely a native Cantonese speaker without a doubt. As for the Australian girl , she's pretty native too in my books.

I saw many Japanese people speaking Cantonese fluently when I was in Hong Kong. I also saw some westerners who were native speakers.

Found this one on your blog, WANNABEAFREAK:

Michael from Canada, never lived in HK.

Reminds me that I should pick up my Cantonese studies again. Working on Mandarin right now, but I have to confess that I simply prefer Cantonese. The lack of resources convinced me that it would be a better idea to study Mandarin first.

This is all very impressive. I'm thinking about picking Cantonese over Japanese and Korean as a second Asian language to Mandarin. But I shouldn't get ahead of myself just yet, until I actually learn Mandarin.
