Not sure if this belongs here but here goes
My first trip to Beijing I spoke very little Mandarin, and to be honest I do not speak much more now, but I had a brief and interesting encounter in communication. I was on a very crowded bus going to the Summer Palace and it was in heavy traffic and standing room only. I found myself standing next to a young guy from Mongolia that spoke a little English and some Mandarin (at least more than I) and we had an hour long conversation going back and forth the between English and Mandarin, he did speak more English than I spoke mandarin however.
It just amazed me at the patients that he had with me in speaking and how hard he was trying to understand both my Mandarin and English. He actually had more patients than a typical Beijingren who tended just to look at me and shake there heads when I tried to speak.

Cool story. How was his mandarin accent? Did he sound like he was from Beijing?
I think people who don't live in major cites/metropolitan areas tend to be more relaxed and less in a hurry then city dwellers.

His Mandarin had a rather heavy accent compared to my wife, who is from Beijing, but his Mandarin was better than mine. Some of the words that he was using he also knew the English for which helped. I was able to get from the conversation that he was living and working in Beijing for a year and that year was almost up and he was rather happy about that. He was not too fond of Beijing and at least one of his reasons was exactly what you are saying. People were in to much of a hurry in Beijing as far as he was concerned and it was too crowded and to noisy. He was happy that he was returning to his home soon. However I could not quite make out exactly were he was form other then Mongolia. That was probably the closets thing I had to a conversation in Mandarin/English and it was with a guy from Mongolia whose native language is not Mandarin

My girlfriend is from Inner Mongolia and she says nearly all urban Mongolians speak Mandarin fluently. I would think some rural Mongolians would be less proficient. Her family, being upper class, speaks Mongolian, Mandarin, and English, and so does she.

The real Mongolians in Outer Mongolia can´t really understand the People from Inner Mongolia(=China). Their words are outdated and their pronunciation is really funny.I think it comes from, because they are mixed with Chinese.

Thanks for that information, bekus. I've always wondered about the Mongolian spoken in Inner Mongolia.

What about Buryat and Kalmyk? Can you understand them or do they have more Russian influence?
