Dear Sir

I have been very intrested in picking up a new language very recently. Out of the two I have summed down my next choice would be either French or Italian. I am literally pulling my hair out deciding which one to pick as I love both.
I have one academic year in a language with about 5hours of lectures/tutorials each week.

Bearing in mind I am a student with quite alot of time on my hand which one should I pursue? My Goal at the very very least would be to atleast understand everything said to me after the years close.

Thank You.

I cannot answer this question for you in the abstract. You already know that Italian pronunciation and orthography are more regular than French. Thus, in terms of time management skills, if you definitely plan on learning both in sequence, you might profit more by doing Italian first, then French. On the other hand, if you have followed my writings and thoughts to the point where you are posing me this question, you know that I consider French to be a necessary tool for learning all sorts of other languages, and thus, if you might want to learn anything other than another Romance language after this next step, then it will probably be more useful to you.

I do not know if you have been following the development of my ideas for my own style of language academy in another thread, but your query has the nature of the kind of “complaint” whose “symptoms” I would be able to treat in the “clinic” I mentioned last week and about which I would like to write a bit more now using your case as an illustration, so I invite you to follow me there and see what we could do if we could meet in person…
