Goal Completed:
I have finished reviewing lessons 1-4, and i have finished lesson 5. I shouldn't have any more distractions this week, so i should be able to do two lessons every 3 days. At this rate, i should finish the Chinese In Steps 1 book by a week on monday.
Im feeling confident with Chinese In Steps, so when i finish book 1 and 2, i should know about 500 hanzi. After this, i think that i will buy a hanzi textbook to really build my vocab.
With the podcasts, i am simply using them to get the speaking practice. I think that i can build my written vocab as well by testing myself on the hanzi in each podcast. Because i have just done a few basic podcasts, the hanzi is familiar to me.
Overall, i am finding the pinyin + hanzi learning approach very rewarding. I know that i could learn the spoken language quicker if i solely studied it, but then i would get to the point where i can't continue without learning the hanzi. I think that with the way things are going, i should be able to reach 750 by christmas. Do people think that this is a reasonable goal? Because i want to have a career in international finance, i think that once i get to 1000 hanzi, i will start to focus on financial terms. I have started doing the same with my Spanish. I learned the tenses and common verbs, and then started reading news stories. So this is a method that works with me, and ill apply it to my Chinese when i am ready.

I have been so busy recently with my university work, so ive put this to one side. But now, i really want to get back into this. I still have the goal of being able comfortably speak chinese by the summer.
So this weekend, i am refreshing my knowledge of lessons 1-8. I did 1 and 2 on the train home, so i have 6 to do. This will really kick start my learning.
Another reason for doing this is that at my uni, there is an open language learning centre, which has the next few books in this series, so ill be able to move on from this book.
Ill keep you updated
Goal:
Refresh lesson 1-8 by Sunday
