Anyone know where I can find a chart of Urdu Alphabet with Hindi equivalents? Urdu though written in arabic type script is much closer in speech to Hindi, so I think it would be easier to learn the script with Hindi equivalent at ready.
For speakers of Arabic - how different is the Urdu script than proper "Arabic"?

This might be interesting for you.
Urdu usually is written in Nastaliq. That's more like a calligraphic form of the Arabic script with some extra Persian letters and I personally find it pretty hard to read - compared to 'usual' Arabic.

After looking at few other sites, I am now even more confused than before.

The link posted above with Hindi-Urdu script seems to have quite different Urdu alphabets from all the other Urdu alphabets I have found on different sites.

Which one is standard Urdu alphabet?

hm, don't you worry - it is the same script.
I just noticed that my first link only had a incomplete list (eg 'a' is missing).
But I found a better overview for you by now:
http://... I got some problems with the URL here (because of the Devanagari in it). Just look up the Wikipedia article about 'Urdu' and change the language to Hindi.
It gives a good tabel comparing Devanagari and Nastaliq incl. Latin script.
By the way, if you only want to learn the Arabic/Urdu script you can do so with every other site teaching Arabic or Persian. It's the same script!
But keep in mind that the letters can look differently depending on their position ie. a letter at the word begining may look somewhat different from a word in the middle or at the end of the word.
ps: another great thing to play with is this Hindi2Urdu transliterator

You can type in anything in Devanagari and it will transform it to more or less correct Urdu. Plus, if you like the more calligrafic style 'Nastaliq' instead of the 'usual' Arabic style, you can download the font called 'Nafees Nastaleeq' (http://www.crulp.org/software/localization/Fonts/nafeesNast aleeq.html) and use it with eg MS Word

There we go. I got an even better one. It also gives you all the letters in front, middle and last position.

Rabyte, thanks for the links.
This is the first time I am attempting to learn a script which is completely alien to me, so it is bit panicky. Learning languages where you recognize a script - even if you don't understand anything - has its comfort.
Yes, mainly I just want to learn the script because I am fluent in Hindi and also familiar with spoken Urdu, so once I can actually read it, I am sure I can improve it by reading and such. And learning Urdu script would be a stepping stone for future standard Arabic studies.
