I can totally relate to having to deal with people who are not as focussed / driven as you are. It's not that I resent helping people who are at a much lower level than I am, I just don't want to feel as though I'm wasting my time. This hasn't happened so much with language learning for me, but more in regards to programming. I'm willing to help people, and I have a lot of knowledge to share. However, even if I don't get anything directly in return and all I want is for the other person to become better, it's still really frustrating to deal with them. They don't want to think, they just want the answers. They don't want to think, or improve, or even understand why what they're asking for may not even be what they really want. And that's when I get frustrated...
I hope your hard core English cramming works out.

Fairyfountain,
First of all your written English is already better than that of an average native speaker. Secondly, don't let yourself become frustrated by other people's shortcomings, if you do so you're just going to be frustrated all the time.
Also, though I completely agree with you that there are sometimes more efficient forms of motivation than accolades. I myself tend to put in more of an effort when someone or something pisses me off, or when I get annoyed with the level of idiocy one can find in a classroom.
Good luck with your English, don't worry about sounding too much like an American though, I don't think it is really worth the effort. Australian is just so sexier.
Where are you in France?

"replace the rap songs with good audiobooks read by Americans"
I'm sure any exposure is good, but that sounds like a good plan...I don't have a problem with rap but once you've heard one song the lyrics won't be much different in the next! This is simply because there’s only so much you can say about Drugs, Guns and Bitches. So replacing them with anything I would see as a marked improvement.
Although your rant was funny to me, I'm sure it was different for you! I wouldn't stress about your pen wielding compadre...you can cut off contact or continue, simple. Getting angry and frustrated isn't going to improve your English...unless you’re frantically looking up 12 ways to say the word 'Bastard' in which case; you owe him a thank you!

Which voice chatting site are you using? It sounds like a good next step for people getting sick of some of the text-chatting sites.
