What is it exactly that sounds horrible about the Arkansas accent? To you it’s just another American accent. Or do you know some history of the American South and what the jokes imply? Do you have something against Arkansas?
A couple of tips: stop worrying so much about which accent you think you need and spend more time learning the language. Anything that isn’t there naturally will just sound goofy anyway.
Ease up on the idioms and slang. Again, this is where trying too hard is way too obvious. If you’re hanging out with natives and you pick up on some stuff that’s one thing, but you’re pulling them out of your bag and sprinkling them all over the place way too much. Your written English is great, but you do more harm than good when you pollute it with dated idioms or slang that simply doesn’t sound good.

As comedian Tim Wilson says, they sound like they're laughing and crying at the same time. I have no problem with the accent, it just gets a little annoying at times. Like all people (especially those who emphasize) that talk like they're from the South.
