So. I'm studying Korean again. I moved to Korea as an English teacher in January of 2007 and flirted with the language doing on and off study for my entire 1.5 years there. I never really knew how to learn a language. I also never had the necessary commitment needed. I ended up having an awesome time in Korea and as I spent more time overseas I realized the power languages had to unveil a culture and a people. I also watched friends of mine integrate more fully into the culture and have different experiences that I didn't have access to. Finally I met my friend. He speaks 8 languages and has been helping and encouraging me with my language learning.
Right now I'm in the U.S. and I'm on the way to Thailand with my sister for a long vacation. I'll probably make it back to Korea in a few months. But for right now I just want to use my full days of free time to get as much Korean in me as possible before I have to work and have plenty of excuses to not study.
I'm using Integrated Korean along with the all japanese all the time method. I am putting sentences from Integrated Korean into Anki and I'm also having a Korean friend of mine translate sentences too.
I hope to keep posting here as a way to encourage myself and get external encouragement and also as a way to mark my progress and see just how far I've come. Any advice is also welcome.
As a progress marker.
I'm 75% through unit 4 of Integrated Korean Beginner 1. I know 142 sentences. I can almost sing Saturday Night by Son Dam Bi. From my time spent in Korea I know a good amount of basic vocab and most most vocab being encountered in Integrated Korean I know.
I've been doing this current study project since 5/10/09 so actually I've made a good amount of progress in that short time.
Let's set some easy goals that I can come back here and post about.
Finish 5 과. Learn 30 more sentences. Get 80% of the way there with Saturday Night. The 노래방 (karaoke) awaits me!

Sorry, I haven't updated in a while. I've been traveling in Thailand now for a few weeks and unfortunately I haven't been studying enough. My sister and my friend just left so now I'm getting myself back on track. My friend who visited me here was Korean so I got to practice a lot of what I've been learning. It was great and amazing to see the progress I had made. It was also quite encouraging that in such little time I could say so much!
My previous goals set have been completed though. I'm now making my way through lesson 7 and know close to 300 sentences. I'm about ready to start the next book Beginner 2 for Integrated Korean.
Even though I was quite distracted with my friend and my sister with me and plenty to do everyday, I still managed to get some study time in. One of my goals during such times is just to do what I can and not take days entirely off.
My new goals are now to increase the sentences in Anki to 350. (It's at 330 now) and learn them all well. And also to make it through lesson 1 of Beginner 2. I'll report back soon! Thanks for your encouragement^^

Here's a new update:
I'm in Korea now and studying a lot. In Thailand I didn't do enough.
I have 900 sentences in Anki and am on Lesson 15 of Beginner 2 and ready to begin Intermediate 1. Studying has become a habit and a hobby now and so I don't have to push myself as much to do it.
I still feel a bit behind and not capable of speaking as much as I want or should be able to. Thus I have a new goal.
Goals:
Finish Intermediate 1 by October 1.
Add all relevant flashcards probably about ~450.
Acquire a Korean girlfriend who can't speak English well and lacks the desire or will power to learn it, to improve my speaking ability.
I'm happy with my progress, though it felt like I didn't do a whole lot in Thailand. I will keep pushing. Some days I have these like eye opening surprising moments where I'm like wow, I know so much. And then other times I feel like wow I don't know anything. But I know if I keep at it the former will become the norm for me.

Oh, you are back in Korea? Where about? Just out of curiosity.
Mmm... I see some flaws in your plans, mainly the third one. If you find a Korean girl who can't speak English well and who is interested in you, the chances are that she's trying to improve her English, so you won't get much Korean practice anyway.
Good luck with all your goals though.. :)

ㅋㅋ Right now I'm living near 쌍문역 north of 기름. I plan to move near 강남 at some point in the future. Actually life is a bit complicated and I may be leaving Korea shortly to come back again, I'm really not sure.
I previously dated 2 girls with very minimal English and no desire to learn English except to try to talk to me more. And now I know my Korean is better than their English was, so it's just a matter of finding similar girls. Hmm, we'll see if it's possible again, I think using online dating is the quickest way to screen for the language ability I want. Wow this really sounds like a sinister plan! The problem with all the other girls I've dated in Korea is that their English is too good, I really think being forced into using the language is a better way to learn it.

Hahaha.. it sounds like you are USING them as a tool for learning languages.. Let's hope no feminist activists find your post.
If you move to 강남, you won't have much trouble finding a job as English teacher. Loads of 학원 there.. :)

Yeah, that's my backup plan. Actually right now I'm in the process of making my own 학원 the plan is to send teachers directly the the students apartments. It's been a little tedious to get started, but hopefully after today's "event" I'm on the right track.
Thanks for the advice. ^^
