After a good number of months not really progressing my Korean ( partly because I have a beatiful baby daughter now ) I've just read through Goldfibre's log and am motivated to give progression another go. I know now that I cant really handle the monotony of learning materials at this point so I'm going to jump right in and try and make progress in a reading program.
First I'll recap where I am at the moment, I probably have 1500-2000 words already and a reasonable ( but very incomplete ) grasp of grammar, I'm very used to the sound of Korean at the moment ( through TV and attending Korean Church ) and can read Hangul pretty well in that I am usually pretty good at getting the sound right even when I do not know the meaning. I have good contacts in the Korean community here through Church and my wife is Korean so help is at hand where I need it.
I have a selection of Korean picture books, children's books, an easy reading new testament and some graded readers ( those from Yonsei University ) so the plan is to just start with the easiest stuff and move onwards over time. I also have a 6000 word frequency dictionary and I plan on only trying to learn unknown words if they are covered by this, other stuff can wait for later. I do also have a 35000 word dictionary and a reference grammar for when I get really stuck.
I plan on starting this evening and updating the log every few days or so.

Well I'm off to a decent start, just read through a picture book called 나도 엄마처럼... Surprisingly I had to look up 9 words even in such an easy book. Not decided what I will do to track these words yet, probably put then into Anki so I can track my progress and make sure I review stuff as I go.

Read through another picture book 아가야, 너는.... this time i had to look up 13 words and check a grammar point with my wife. I think the first few books once a graduate from these toddler books are going to see me use the dictionary a lot. I decided I am going to use Anki to track vocabulary items.
I have to say, even toddler picture books are actually more engaging than textbook dialogs.....

Read another picture book this morning, 와, 재미있다!, this one was a little harder than the others so far, had to look up 11 words but it also had a few grammar constructions that I'm not too sure about. I'd forgotten just how good your grammar has to be even for kids picture books, still I was able to get the gist of what was going on so I'm not going to worry too much.
I'm looking at a significant jump in native materials now though with my remaining picture books being significantly more wordy than those I've tackled so far. I think what I'm actually going to do is start on the first of the Yonsei 한국어 읽기 reading series before going back to the kids books, I have all 5 한국어 읽기 books and unfortunately the first is the only one that is learning style dialogs which don't appeal massively, still I'm going to tackle it now while motivation is high to make sure I'm ready for the rest of the series.

I had a slight change of plan and decided to read through all the dialogs in a couple of the courses I previously worked through to pick up any points I may have missed before. So far today I worked through the 40 dialogs in Korean made easy and also the 20 dialogs in Survival Korean, I think it's probably been a worthwhile exercise as the material is familiar but I never memorised this material and it's been a while since I used it so I didn't know what was coming up. I even picked out a few vocabulary items for review in Anki.
I have some other courses that I didnt actually complete for one reason or another so I'll probably repeat this process with those also.

I read through the first 12 dialogs in the Living language course this morning, I had only looked at the first 4 ( i think ) previously so this was quite a bit tougher than the dialogs yesterday, mainly because there was plenty of unfamiliar vocabulary. I will try and get through the remaining 3 dialogs during the course of the day and will probably work through the dialogs in the teach yourself book next.

I also made it through the last 3 dialogs of the Living Language course now, have a pile of stuff to enter into Anki now so aside of that I probably am done for today at this point.

Good luck on your Korean journey, Chris.
I hope you have as much success as GoldFibre did. Feel free to ask me any questions if you have any. :)
