I found myself a good software dictionary, Stardict running on Ubuntu 9.04, I fed it some tests and it seems very nice, it has a hanja dictionary, Korean-Korean dictionary and a pair of Korean English dictionaries. The only problem now is going to be training myself to use it when I read, I dont naturally prefer to read on a computer screen and so far i havent found a lot I want to read online. I might end up just using it as an electronic dictionary when I read books.

I attended Korean church today, I recognised a few extra words that I learned this week which was good. Aside of that I've basically been drilling the SRS, I seem to be recalling an extra 30-40 words from the frequency list per day which isn't as much as I had hoped but is certainly good enough to keep me motivated. I've also started adding in some words from wordshower now, around 160 in the last 2 days. Many are familiar but I'm cutting and pasting from the site to save on input time and I can live with some duplication.

I passed the 70% mark for grades 4 or 5 for the most common 1000 list I have in mnemosyne. That's good recall on an extra 200 words in 3 days, a result I'm really encouraged by, the not memorised pile is also shrinking, I got 153 wrong today which is a lot but an improvement on previous results, it was a good deal easier to move them back up to grade 2, so again, I am encouraged.

I hit 80% retention on the frequency list today so I'm recalling at an extra 50 words a day or thereabouts, still, I dont think I can continue with rote memorisation for any length of time. I think I'm going to put in the effort to get on top of the material in the 'Handbook of Korean vocabulary', I have had some success using this before but I've never tackled the material systematically. Not sure exactly how I'm going to go about it yet but I'm settled on the idea at least.

I'm up to 82.5% retention on the 1000 word list today and I think I am going to settle for that, a good number of the words I added are actually pretty basic. Most of the words I'm missing now are to do with government, economy or warfare and, as important as those words are, they aren't words I will need much for now as I'm targetting kids books which typically concern animals, friendships and family.

I've given a good deal of thought over what do to with the 'Handbook of Korean vocabulary' and I think I've ruled out a move to work through the book and I'm instead going to use it to investigate words I encounter through reading in an effort to improve my understanding of these words and help in remembering them. So, as of today I'm back to my original intention which was to improve my Korean through reading ( and listening if I have audio for a text ). I have a book about a girl who has a lady bear for a friend which is a step up from what I was previously tackling so I'm going to start there and also finish off the first Yonsei reader. I'm going to read by the computer for now and use Stardict in place of the paper dictionary I was previously using.
