Thanks though, that cleared my intial confusion at least - and caused some more. ;p What other language has a special first person pronoun for amateur radio operators? I love Japanese! ^^

That list is certainly fun to look at but it can be daunting to a learner. I wouldn't stress about getting to know them too much. As you can see quite a few of them are regional or now largely archaic. I have only heard watakushi, watashi, boku, ore, uchi, and atashi with any sort of regularity. I may have come across some of the others in literature but really there's no need to worry about getting to know all of those.
As an example, when I did work in Japan my boss who is in his 30s spoke to me using boku. Watashi is too formal and ore would have been inappropriate.
