Well, I've finally decided to sit down and try to "learn" Icelandic. Since I am doing this primarily for reading comprehension, and since this is the only self-motivated method that would for me, I decided I would learn by translating texts.
The first text that I am trying out, is Rauðer Fyrirlestur (A Red Lecture), by Þorstein Gylfason, an Icelandic intellectual. I don't know much about the text, except that from its name and description on Wikipedia, it's respectively a socialist attack on libertarianism.
Anyways, I came upon this paper, found no translation, and figured this might be a way to motivate me; but unfortunately, I have no reference with which to compare my translation, so the success of my learning and this journal will depend solely upon any Icelandic speakers who come across my posts. :-(
I worked on the first line tonight, and am held up with one section of it; my three years of High School Latin have helped a lot, just not completely.
Original sentence, bracketed where I was confused:
Þessi lestur minn er ekki einasta gerður handa þessu [húsi þótt nafn hans bendi til þess], heldur er hann fyrst og fremst saminn handa vini mínum Helga Hálfdanarsyni sjötugum sem varð hinn 14da ágúst síðastliðinn.
My "translation":
This study of mine was made not only for [his home even though his name indicates this???], but is above all he has agreed for my 70 year old friend Helga Hálfdanarsyni who became unconscious on the 14th of last August.

I'm Icelandic and I can tell you that this is correctly translated for the most part but I'm not sure about the first few words (Þessi lestur minn er ekki einasta gerður handa þessu... seance it can mean more than one thing, it can mean like you sad his study but it can also mean his readings ( like if he was reading a story for someone) if I would see more of the text I could tell you what this means without any difficulties
