Haha - that would irk me immensely. At first I wondered why was he posting something about Chinese here, but then I find it may be pretty useful. I'm confused as to why a single program would have Japanese AND German vocabulary in it (let alone a game having both), but if I ever decide to learn German (which is likely to happen eventually) this will become useful. :)

I think it's more of a general game which lets you learn vocabulary, and there exist vocabulary lists for it in Japanese, German, and Indonesian (iirc). So it's not that it teaches you both, but you select which of those you want to learn

PS: Nobody has pointed it out yet, or maybe it's just me: Your title doesn't seem to imaginative, since Heisig's "Remembering the Kanji" was first called "Adventures in Kanji-Land", and your "Adventures in Polyglottery" - for Japanese no less - reminds (at least me) a lot of that.

Well, I can assure you that it's all a coincidence... a strange coincidence that is now bothering me tremendously. Perhaps a change of title is in order, assuming I can come up with one that I like. It took me a little while to come up with this name, y'know?

Hihi, then sorry to be the one to bring the bad news ;) But it's nothing that should 'bother you tremendously' ;)

It just bugs me that I'm not as original as I thought I was. I don't enjoy 'reinventing the wheel,' as it were.

Incidentally, I have pretty much finished up Katakana. I still have to cover combinational sounds (how the Japanese produce sounds like "kya" or "pyu" in Kana) as well as a few 'unusual' aspects of Katakana usage the Japanese have employed in their attempts to more accurately produce western loan-words, but as for the characters themselves I'm finished relearning them. I've quizzed myself a few times with flashcards, and I can readily recognize and read the vast majority of them, with a lot of them being immediate. The results from writing them from memory are a little lower than what I had hoped, but I'm not too concerned with it, as I probably won't be writing them nearly as much as I'll be typing them.

Thanks to suggestions in my "Beginning the Adventure: how?" topic, I think that for the present time I'll focus on phrases, grammar, and a bit of vocabulary. I won't hold off on the Kanji for too long, but I don't want to throw too much at my brain at once: it's not quite as sharp as it used to be.

To that end, I'm going to be using the NHK audio lessons and my grammar book, as well as browsing the AJATT site.

AJATT is just full of useful information. I have begun listening to Japanese... almost all the time. I have found the audio book files present in a post on this forum to be of considerable use, and I am hunting for saved podcasts in Japanese - about any subject. Google hasn't been that useful, as searching "Japanese podcasts" have only directed me toward podcasts about learning Japanese. Mildly interesting stuff, but now what I'm currently looking for. I'm also hunting for more Japanese music. I can't seem to get enough of that stuff - especially if there are other artists out there like Ikue Asazaki. I just love her stuff. :)

Aside from that, I haven't made any real progress. I'm fairly confident that I can 'graduate' out of the Kana now, as I recognize all of them without having to try. I'm still a slow "reader" though, and I'm sure that will only become more true when Kanji is thrown into the mix. Oh boy, the Kanji. I just can't wait. ;)

As I said in my last post, I would focus on phrases, vocabulary, and grammar. Well... I ended up not really looking at much grammar these last few days, as Khatzumoto-sama (I can't decide if I'm being sarcastic with the "-sama" or not) ended up being very fluent in Japanese without studying any grammar at all... and even seems to be against such study as a way of learning the language. I'm not sure if I could manage that (particularly in regards to some of the particles), but for now I'm focusing much more on vocabulary and phrases.

Kanji is calling me, but I think I'll try and hold off on that for now.

(edit: forgot the address to that post I was talking about:)

Why would you hold off on Kanji?

Truth be told, I'm not really sure. I'm actually a bit uncertain as to how I want to do this now, given the different bits of advice I got in my "Beginning the Adventure" topic. I'm changing my mind about every time I think about it, and sometimes I feel I must begin the Kanji immediately while at other times I feel it would help me in other fields of study if I held off for a little and focus more on immersion and grammar and other stuff.

It's just overwhelming, having to learn so many things. I'm having difficulty prioritizing. I really need to have a more solid plan of action here... =/

(edit): I ran into this problem last time, too, and that, coupled with an increasingly busy life and a new demanding job, caused me to postpone (quit) my studies of Japanese. I had a more solid plan last time, but in retrospect I have to say it was a terrible, terrible way to try and learn a new language (seriously, there was no immersion at all really - what was I thinking?) - it was this previous failure that caused me to seek other language learners and brought me to this forum.

[Edited a lot of this out. Really, what was I thinking when I typed all that?]

(edit 2): I'm not really expecting you (or anyone) to solve all of that for me, by the way. Don't think I'm just desperately asking for help, even if it seems that way. I'll work it out... eventually.
