Rather than use the Pimsleur template, I would recommend this course Conversational Tamil for Peace Corps It would give a much better background and vocabulary than the typical Pimsleur "do you want to have a drink at my place?"

I agree with you that Pimsleur is too light - on the other hand, the FDFS course is a bit old-fashioned and heavy, especially for those of use spoiled by some of the excellent modern teaching material for some popular languages.

There is another book, An Intensive Course in Tamil with 24 cassettes (no CDs) Rs.1080.00 but as far as I know you have to order it
from India http://www.ciil.org/Main/Publications/audio.htm

Thanks - I might do this (once I work out what this Rs amount is in my money, and if I can get hold of a cassette recorder!). Do you (or anyone else reading this) have any experience with this course?

I also ran across some great additional websites for Tamil!!
UPenn Tamil
Learn Tamil Textbook
Tamil through English
Tips for Learning Dravidian Languages

Thanks again - some of these I'd already found, others I hadn't.

As a general observation is that there is very often a fundamental difference in teaching material written by, or delivered by, a native speaker of the language one wishes to learn, and teaching material from, or being taught by, someone for whom the target language was also for them not their first language. With a 'live' teacher, nativeness probably has more advantages, especially for pronunciation, and idiomatic expression; however, and particularly for self-learning books, it is an advantage if the author has a good idea of where the student is "coming from". Sometimes this can be achieved by a 'native' speaker, but not often. In some of these Tamil websites, I think that the authors have under-estimated the difficulties of the very first steps for the foreign student.

i am from india, and i live in a state neighboring tamil nadu (in bangalore,karnataka)..

hindi and tamil are two different languages, and so link what so ever.

also tamil nadu is a very conservative state and hindi wont help you even a bit over
there.

also only a few people know English over there.

PS: hindi is my native language, and i hav lot of tamilien friends but i found it very
difficult to learn.

I am thinking of trying to find a Tamil speaker with whom to make a Pimsleur-modelled set of recordings, but I
know that this would be a very big ask, and I would need to get soemone who had some sympathy for the
motivations of someone who would want to learn something for no apparent practical outcome.

Thoughts on this topic from forum members would be much appreciated.
